    Hey

I am hopefully going to recieve my 1520 soon. I mostly watch tv shows and movies on the computer, and i dont like keeping the laptop on my lap for hours. So i keep the laptop on the bed instead. How can this damage the laptop?

I used to do this to my previous laptop, and i think that is why it got soo hot always...

Please tell me if this will damage it or not?

You might want to get a flat surface for the laptop to sit on--I'm not sure if the 1520 has vents on the bottom side, but if it does, then setting it on a fabric surface (such as a carpet or bed spread) won't allow the air to properly flow through the vents--causing the laptop to overheat.

Yes, most Vostro and Inspirons have air vents underneath the notebook.

if you have a hardcover book, or a thin piece of wood, you can keep your laptop on it so the air can properly circumvent, otherwise it might get too hot which will shorten the overall lifespan of your computer

they sell very cheap laptop "boards" or similar simply a board with a cushioned bottom under it so it will stay where you set it but the laptop can still sit on the flat surface so air can escape/enter either way

no you don't need a notebook cooler, the laptop is pretty cool already.

as for the Vent on the side, the vent on the bottom is the intake for the fan that pushes air though the side vent.

As the others have recommended... use a flat board or etc...

The purpose of sheets and blankets are to insulate heat to keep you warm while you sleep. By placing a computer directly on there your sheets will be insulating the case while the machine is designed to use its body to dissipate heat. You shouldn't insulate anything that doesn't need insulation ;)

Try the iLap (rain design). Kinda expensive but may be a good solution. I have one and like it.

sitting it on the sleeve probably isn't the best idea SoMuch2S@y, would impede airflow. As long as you aren't doing anything particularly taxing on it, it probably won't hurt the laptop as the laptop is fairly cool so its your call. If it is straight on the lap there is at least some airflow.

This is a very simple thing to understand. There are small legs on the bottom of your notebook to keep it elevated from the surface for air to flow underneath, so the air vents can draw air in and side vent will push it out (with the help of a FAN). If you place your notebook on a soft cushion surface or anything/anyway blocking those vents (bottom and side) the air flow will stop = no way to dispose heat out of the notebook = overheat = component damage.
