So I order a dell on Nov 01 2012 and it said the estimate ship date is Nov 23. Thats like 16 business days. Yet I see they have deals where they can ship out the laptops within 48hours.

Just wondering shouldn't dell try to sell laptops out in "First in first out" order rather then giving certain promos a faster shipment date? I also read that always seems to delays the actual shipment date which I hope won't happen coz waiting over a month for something I order seems like a long long time.

Likely because those laptops are under the "Shipfast" label. They are preconstructed systems that they've purposely allocated to be sent out as quickly as possible.

Your system is probably being built from scratch to spec, which takes longer. They may also be waiting upon parts which they don't have which could lengthen the delivery time.

Yea. Hopefully soon! Don't want to wait over a month for it.

That's Dell's just-in-time manufacturing system for you; it saves them a fortune in manufacturing costs.

If it's any consolation, most systems seem to ship ahead of the original date.

Yeah, most systems ship a few days before the estimate, but it can go the other way too if there is a problem with the order. Depending on what laptop you ordered, they have to actually build the thing and i'm willing to bet that Dell doesn't start manufacturing the system right away and that also there is probably some red tape associated with an order.

It also depends on which laptop you order, for mainstream systems, they probably have stocks of those lying around waiting to be shipped with only a few finishing touches hence the 48 hours while for other systems like the Precisions, they probably don't really start building them until someone orders one given the amount of configuration options available and the smaller production volume.
