I want to keep AIM running or MSN but when I close the laptop it disconnects me from my network. Is there any way to keep it going when I close it?

Change power options and set lid close action to do nothing

    yes
in your power options change it so that your laptop doesnt go into hibernation or standby when you close your lid, it will keep on running continuously without kicking you from your network

you might want to make sure your laptop is well ventilated if you choose to do this. it's possible it could overheat even when idle.

Also you may want to make sure that in device manager the checkmark is removed from this setting
