I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1720 but have been previously using a HP desktop computer for about 3 years. In that time I have accumulated a lot of files, such as music, pictures, gaming content, school documents ect. How do I transfer these files onto my laptop? Because other people at my house are still using the desktop and I dont want my stuff on there anymore.

Had I not had two external HDDs, I'd probably use either my 8GB ZEN or 4GB iPod. Had I not had those, I'd probably buy a network cable.

And the last option would probably be to use DVDs

I suggest create a small home network and transfer all the files you want over to the new laptop.

I would second the home network option. Assuming, of course, that your HP desktop has a wireless card? :p

The best thing to use would be a LAN cable, since everyone has one. (Everyone who uses the internet at least).

Just plug the LAN cable into the internet ports on both computers. Bear in mind that it will take windows around 10 mins (lol) to detect the connection.

Go to your old computer, click on the important folders, right click on them and activate file sharing for "everyone".

Then on your new computer, go to "Network" in the start menu. Your other computer should appear on the list. Find your shared folders and copy+paste the stuff to your desktop. It will be very fast. After that, delete all the stuff on your old computer.

In the long term, I would recommend that you get an external HDD for backing up your data, since windows computers are prone to crashing and requiring a reformat. It will also make file transfers a lot easier.

try something really simple first. I use yahoo chat, and it transfers like lightning in my own home network. A 4 minute song transfers in 10 seconds. Hope this helps. :D
