    start->control panel->power options->power schemes

    then modify the power profile(s) you use such that the "Turn Off Monitor" option is selected and has some value other than NEVER.

    you can also use a screen saver...lcds don't really have a problem with staying on for long periods of time anymore.

    otherwise, if you dont want to use a screen saver and want to keep it on desktop, just simply lower the brightness on the lcd, thats what i do sometimes

    Look in the "power options" in the control panel. The Power Schemes tab should automatically appear and you should be able to change the time in which it takes the screen to turn off.
