I haven't been able to figure out how to find out the type of screen I have. In the displays option it just says standard vga screen or something like that.

Oh okay... mine says SEC... what's the general consensus on SECs?
-
SECS are usually pretty good, their up there with LGP
-
-
Yeh i have sec, it seems really good!
-
-
SEC = Samsung Electronics Corporation
-
Mines LPL and I like mine. Anyone have complaints about LPL?
-
Yeh no grains here with the sec, only thing i will say is the viewing angle is ****!! mind u thats the case with many lappy's
-
What about AUO2077?
-
i have an anti-glare screen and the manufacturer is sec. its pretty good. i cant complain, except for one dead pixel that doesn't bother me much. i figure its just one of the bad apples because i've been reading the forums and secs seem to be one of the better screens.
auo, on the other hand, has some bad reviews. most of the grainy screens have auo. -
As far as screens go, I didn't get to figure out what my old one was before I had to ship it off. This screen pulls up as cpt141f, and I have no idea who makes that. It's much better than the original screen I had however, so I'm happy. -
Umm im not sure but that mite be a philips screen! yeh i also have the anti glare screen which is sec, and i love it.... i only whish that dell would also make the higher res screens wit anti glare

Here are a few standard manufacturer ID's
Sanyo Epson Imaging Device (SEID)
Toshiba Matsu****a DisplayTechnology (TMD)
Samsung Electronics (SEC or SSE)
LG.Philips LCD (LPL)
HannStar (HSD)
Quanta Display (QDI)
Chi Mei (CMO)
You will probably start seeing Dell use more panels from a division of Tatung
Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT). I have one of these in a Vostro 1500 in my office -
are they any good?
-
All the above mentioned manufacturers make excellent displays.
The CPT panel I mentioned above is a WXGA panel, the colors/contrast is excellent, horizontal angles are not bad, vertical angles are poor but within Dell's purchase spec. CPT has many cross licenses with Sharp and Dell has used them to supply 19" and 20" Desktop displays for many years.
From an industry perspective the demand for TFT panels has been hard to manage as the larger ODM's have not adequately supplied their suppliers with full order projections -
Cmorr, have you been able to compare your CPT screen with any others? My original screen, when running the Blank screen saver, had a sort of bluish tint to it. This screen is completely black when I do the same test.
-
The Vostro 1500 in my office is an evaluation unit Dell supplied me with (I am a third party technology consultant that assists large companies with equipment life cycle decisions). As such I can't offer a comparison to this platform. I do expect to have a 1500 with the WXGA+ panel and a 1700 within the next 10 days.
I can offer as feedback, that I have seen and measured exaggerated blue levels in LPL/Philips panels used by Dell and others including HP. -
I've got a WSXGA+ in my Vostro 1500....it is a "LPLF300" and it is glorious.
-
i also saw a 1500 with a shp screen i have yet to determine who makes those
i spoke with samsung tech support about the sec model numbers and they also told me the one i was asking about was not their screen..they did confirm the sse models to me on the phone though.. i wonder if seiko-epson and samsung screens are one in the same?? or made in the same build house
i have also seen anadtech, tomshardware, and many other review sites sepcify the sec as seiko epson as well..
my first 1500 had a cpt screen... it was awesome color wise except it had terrible light bleeding it was pretty bad i could not deal with it.. other than that the screen was very very nice -
Hey, are all LCD screen colors supposed to be washed out, or is that just a problem with SEC or maybe just my individual one? I know the colors are a lot more whiter than the ones from my CRT.
-
you will not see the same picture from a lcd that you did on a crt imo.. almost every time a lcd will look different than the crt.. generally much brighter.. a lot of times though a lcd will not match the black levels of the crt's

SHP is the HW ID used by Sharp -

thanks cmorr.. shp is also what is in all of the toshiba's at the office.. they are very nice imo -
I have a SEC screen at the moment. The colors are vibrant, brightness is good, and as far as I can tell no graininess. Only issue I have is light leakage at the bottom and possibly at the corners that really bothers me. I'm hoping to avoid an AUO screen with my replacement, especially with all of its bad reviews. I have heard little complaints of LPL screens, so my guess is they are tops in quality.
-
I also currently have SEC3157 on my 1400, but I ordered a replacement due to the noisy DVD drive and bad speakers. so, i talked to a tech, rep. and he told me that I had a better chance of getting the same SEC screen on my replacement because my first one was SEC. I hope this is true.. if i get a AUO..man **** this **** .. ima refund me money
-
SEC is definitely Samsung's LCD made in Kiheung, Korea. It has been thoroughly discussed yesterday and someone has taken apart his Vostro 1400 and show a picture on the label to proof that. Let's not confuse other people anymore.
This is found on Samsung's website.
This is the thread from yesterday. Look for post #30 for the picture of the label. -
lol someone needs to tell anandtech they are wrong i guess then
-
Someone actually posted in Anandtech's forum several months ago about the error made by Astra.
-
So im the only person with an LPL screen? Huh, well I guess Im lucky I didn't get a AOU screen, haven't heard anything good about them.
-
i have the cpt screen. i think its decent. the colors are great, no grainyness. the only thing i dont like are the viewing angles, but i can live with it.

It's the matte 1200x800 screen.
Not bad, but suffers from severe bleeding and not so wide viewing angles. It is a fair laptop screen though. Nice colors and the bleeding is somehow mitigated when the background is not so dark. -
I got a SEC, it does have the speckled screen though, more commonly known as "the grain". Though the text is great, and the colors are great, white to light grey backgrounds show speckles or "the grain". I don't want to get it replaced with something worse, but if there is a perfect screen out there, I want it....contacting dell is almost impossible lately, hold times are 10 minutes and more and according to the dell rep on the forums, I should email dell at [email protected], so far no response from there either. This is painful
I don't want to send my computer back in either, since school starts soon
-
I have a LG screen and it looks grainy when on white background.
Has anyone compared a LG screen with a SEC screen? -
i just recieved mine today and I LOVE IT!!! the screen is a cpt141f and it is absolutely FLAWLESS!! no light leakage and thank god no graininess. the videos look alive on it. im still trying to see what bloatware i can remove
-
Looked at my screen some more last night after work. If I open up Notepad, and maximize it (white background), and look very closely, I can see what might be considered grain. The white is not pure, and it looks fairly ugly.
However, at a normal viewing distance, even the white looks fine (and of course other colors do as well). My LPL screen is good enough for me. -
I have an LPL, no graininess, viewing angles are awesome, can't complain.
-
what is this on my m1210...
MONITOR/LCD58E3 -
My WXGA+ is AUO2077 and it doesn't look grainy.
Well, at least I think it isn't -
I'm really glad I went with the glossy wxga+ screen. games look incredible.
-
My "cpt141f" screen on the inspiron 1520, though not grainy, has excessive light bleeding, terrible viewing angles and terrible brightness&contrast values.
-
Yea I have an AUO screen and to me it looks great, and I came from a 19' 4MS response DVI LCD Monitor. Looks great to me, no compaints here.
-
my cpt i had was awesome minus the light bleeding
-
-
I've got a CPT screen, and it's perfect other than the slight light bleeding at the bottom of the screen. It doesn't bother me really, only when I'm playing games or whatever. Other than it, it's not really noticeable.
-
Mine's a "LCD,15.4WSXGA+,VESA,TLF,SMSNG" from dell online...
-
How do you find out who manufactures your screen?
