Now that I think of this I have always had this problem with Dell Laptops...

I have a new XPS 1710 and I can't figure out how to turn of the system beep. When I'm in Windows I turn off all sound and it's mute, but the annoying and LOUD system beep is still there. I checked everywhere, BIOS, etc... and I can't find it.

How do I turn that off, it's really annoying at work.

    HELP!

I usually cut of the speaker wire..
okay, sure, you could also disconnect it... but let's be honest
cutting it off, gives you this McGyver-defuses-a-Nuclear-Bomb-kind-of-feeling.. and you could always pretend there would be another blue and yellow wire and you just are not quite sure which one it is...
    makes things more exciting.. :)

zeek, yea the beep form the wireless connecting allways annoyed the hell out of me to. Its worse when I found out its tied into the laptops system speaker (wich is actually fed through the front speakers) wich you cant control... sort of.

Someone pointed out that if you go into your device manager and under the view tab, check off "show hidden devices", and then go to the newly opened non plug and player drivers, youll see something called "beep". This gives programs access to the pc speaker, just disable this and your system will no longer give any unwanted beeps.

Girl, there ain't no pain in me looking at your (beep)

I disabled the Beep like you said but it didn't help! The LOUD system beep is still there, I can't even control the volume, and did I mention it's LOUD!

It sounds like it's coming out my regular speakers, so I don't think I can cut any wires, not that I would attempt such a thing.

Same thing here. And it's ANNOYING! I'll make this my "project" for tonight.

If anything, I've done this before: Find the wav file load it into an editor, lower the volume and save it.

Actually I saved another sound as beep for an app that needed to beep and the security office really wanted an attention getter. The program had no other choice, so I set windows to no sounds and let the program drive the guards crazy anytime someone opened a monitored door.

    ANSWER:
    open proset/wireless app
    open tools/application settings.
uncheck boxes for information notifications and alert notifications.

You won't get the beeps, but you won't get the pop ups either.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. Like several posts have noted, it occasionally makes a loud beep, about 4 to 5 times a day, maybe even more when I’m away. I have Googled for answers, tried all suggestions, and nothing has worked so far…

    * The Noise: A loud slightly prolonged beep, a bit louder than any other usual alert.
    * Laptop Speakers/Volume Off: I turn the Volume to mute, as per one post. Still beeps.
    * System Speakers Off: I disabled the System Speakers, as per one post. Still beeps.
    * Peripherals Off: The beep occurs whether my Logitech USB wired mouse and external Maxtor hard drive are connected or not.
    * Intel PROSet Wireless Internet Off: The beep occurs whether the internal Intel wireless card is enabled or disabled. I also unchecked all the notifications under Tools > Application Settings
    * Beep Off: Under Systems > Hardware > Device Manager, one post suggested disabling the “Beep” so I did and you guessed it, it still beeps!

PLEASE HELP if you have any further suggestions!!! :)

    Use Regedit

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Beep

set the key "Start = 4"

    Reboot

Thanks so much for your reply. I looked up the path you sent and it is already set to 4 :(

Any other suggestions? I have no idea what I'm doing under regedit... is there any other number I should try? Thanks again!!!

I really can't figure it out. The internal speaker is disabled, the external speaker volume is muted. Is there a 3rd speaker that can make this noise? (It's a Dell E1505).

Thanks so much for your input, but it still beeps :(
    Here's a summary:

    THE BEEP PROBLEM

    * LAPTOP: Dell Inspiron E1505, NO Peripherals
    * BEEP: Louder than any other sound, About 1.5 seconds
    * BEEP FREQUENCY: Random, Usually about 3 to 5 times a day
    * EVENT: Random, Usually while checking email, writing a paper, on screen saver, whenever...

    SOLUTIONS TRIED BUT STILL BEEPS

    * MUTE Volume
    * DISABLE Intel PROSet Wireless Internet (and unchecked all notifications)
    * DISABLE "Beep" (under Systems > Hardware > Device Manager)
    * DISABLE "System Speaker" (under Systems > Hardware > Device Manager)
    * REGEDIT HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Beep "Start = 4"
    * BLANK SOUND SCHEME http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...77#post1381777

I could speculate that the beep may be coming from BIOS.
If that's true then there won't be anything in Windows to disable it.

Well I had a Dell 700m laptop -- when I would move the volume slider up and down the system speaker would beep. It would beep when logging on to wireless etc.. Dell could not fix it.

Eventually they sent me the XPS 1210 as a replacement. The problem dosn't happen anymore when I mute PC SPEAKER in the "SB Audigy" mixer. With it muted on the other laptop in the general speaker mixer, the system would still beep.

Good luck -- I heard from one tech it is the way the "system bus" is setup?

    Hello,

I recently came across this thread while trying to solve my beep issue... None of the examples here worked for me either. But I did fix it! Once you disable the hidden device, right click -> properties, here you want to stop the driver. I did this and BINGO! no more annoying beep that made me want to throw the laptop out the office window. Hope this helps.

Hey guys. Like an idiot, I uninstalled the Beep driver on my Precision M65, and now the pc speakers don't function at all. Interestingly, the sound still works when I connect headphones. I've searched everywhere to figure out how to reinstall the beep driver, but since it doesn't show up in the device manager (even after checking show hidden devices) I can't find out how to reinstall it.

I tried reinstalling the sound drivers. The only thing left I can think to try is to reinstall windows. Any other suggestions?

I've searched around on the web for a while, and I've even found the event(s) in my logs:

    from setupapi.log:
    [2007/02/23 14:36:24 1844.358]
    #-198 Command line processed: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe" C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc /s

#W105 Device "ROOT\LEGACY_BEEP\0000" required reboot: Query remove failed (uninstall) CfgMgr32 returned: 0x17: CR_REMOVE_VETOED.
    #I048 Device removed.

#W108 Device "ROOT\LEGACY_BEEP\0000" required reboot: Could not disable device.
    #I298 DICS_DISABLE DICS_FLAG_GLOBAL: Disabling device globally.

And here is the original configuration from setup.log (when I installed windows):
    \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\beep.sys = "beep.sys","c82c"

    Thanks in advance!
