I'm going to get a laptop for college. I plan to use it for the typical internet stuff, watching DVDs, playing games, etc. Right now I'm looking at an Inspiron 6000 with the following specs:

    Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support
    512MB DDR2 SDRAM 2 Dimms
    15.4 inch WXGA LCD Panel
    128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON X300 PCI Express x16 Graphics
    60GB Hard Drive
    8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
6-cell Lithium Ion Battery (53 WHr)
2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support

I wasn't sure about the RAM because I was maybe thinking about just doing 256mb of ram and buying 2 sticks of 512 online. I also wasn't sure about the screen. What is the difference between the regular one and the 15.4 inch UltraSharp WUXGA LCD Panel (other than $175).

You might want to go up to 1GB on the RAMs for gaming.
CPU speed might be a bit of an over kill, unless the upgrade aint costing much.

As for the screen WXGA = 1440x900, while WUXGA = 1920x1200, which I would consider a bit too high for 15.4", but that is just my opinion. Screen res is more of a personal pref.

    MISTAKE on my end.

you said WXGA, which is 1280x800. WXGA+, would be 1440x900 ... my bad :p

Thats probably a good idea. You'll get ram lot cheaper from non Dell source. And if you're serious about gaming you might wanna get 7200 rpm hard drives.
