Just wanted to get an idea of how many folks are satisfied with Dell's new "Ultra Portable". Have seen a lot of issues with build quality, keyboard flex, bad screens, etc. Wanted to get an idea of how many were actually satisfied with their new baby.
    Thnx.

I'll cast a vote on behalf of my father-in-law. He's owned 5 or 6 notebooks and he really loves this one. I'd probably switch to it as well if it dropped a pound or more.

Previously owned a G4 12" Powerbook and a number of x86 books. I liked the G4 size but got bored with OSX (the only reason it is so "Rock Solid" is because it works out of the box but thats just about it. Anything else I wanted to do with it was like pulling teeth.) I wanted something small lightweight with dedicated graphics. Did a lot of investigating of the past couple months and was waiting for this to come out before making a decision. Dont regret it at all. Got it pretty much loaded without the camera package for 1157 with the EPP coupon. (T2500/nvidia/1GB). The only thing I would eventually like to do is upgrade the 5400rpm drive to 7200 once higher capacities are available. So I am very pleased with it. It met all my expectations.

This notebook is great because its a perfect size and has a mid range video card. It also had good build quality and looks good as well.

jtom: question for you..............what is the performance like with the entry level 1.66 Core Duo? Would I really see a difference between it & say the 1.83 or 2.0? Or is it just a benchmarking difference?

I dont think this notebook has had many "issues" besides the keyboard flex. I think the screen thing was just from one post. My screen wont do anything even if I press hard on the back. This is a great notebook, and I definitely love it.

There is very little difference. Basically you would only see a difference if you do intense programming. Getting the 1.83 is a waste of money; get the 1.66!

Totally happy with mine. Its rock solid, excpt for the keyboard, but it dosent bug me at all. The screen was really a suprise to me, it was alot bigger then I thought it was, and that made me very happy. I thought I was going to be able to fit it in my pocket, as my friend said. But seriously its a great notebook, and it games great. Well my toped out model does, but if you get the 7400 it will do games well.

am quite happy, though i'd prefer it if it was a tad bit thinner.

would also have preferred it if dell didn't hide the fact that mine came with t2300e rather than t2300 and then gave me a 'take it or leave it' attitude... wanted to return to get another one but simply can't find anything else that's as good in terms of price to performance ratio...

oh well, i might wait for some core 2 duo or amd turion x2 notebooks to come out and get those instead

I can second that, i used to have an e1705 with a 1.66 core duo and a 7800. the only game i saw it ever max out the processor was FEAR, not oblivion, doom 3 or anything else i saw! with doom 3 niether processors got abouve 50% and with oblivion niether got abouve 75% ! in terms of bench marks, you would see almost no difference.

the sony sz notebooks are 13.3 inches and very thin, they have a hybrid graphics system that can use both the 950 and the 7400. that is one notebook that doesn't compramize in terms of thinness vrs power.

Ok I stand corrected. But the SZ dosent look as good as the 1210 :) I also just took a look at the sz, I personally think its too thin, not enough structure there for my liking.

I have disassembled three M1210 units. I must say, Dell has some quality control issues. One unit had masking tape covering the bluetooth module instead of using the black adhesive. In another unit, one of the round metal brackets that holds the heatsink to the GPU was not installed properly.

One of the units also had some keyboard flex, but upon disassembling and reassembling the unit, the issue wentg away. Overall, I am impressed by the performance/size ratio of this notebook. It is definitely a great ultra-portable, although it's on the bulky side.

Good to know. I was trying to decide if I should spring for the higher proc, but you have made up my mind. Especially considering that a lot of us would want to slip a Merom proc in when they become available. :D

Well, so far, it looks as if Dell have won your hearts & minds with this little baby!!
As I said over in Notebookforums, after reading about all the little & some not-so-little problems, I was somewhat surprised at the positive response to my little poll. It really does show that those with the problems tend to speak out & those that are generally happy, you don't hear from. But, as the votes show, most of you are very happy with Dell's latest.
Please continue to vote & post your comments. This is really helpful to me. Right now, I'm stuck between the Asus W3J & the M1210!! They are both great machines.......decisions, decisions!!

I previously used a 700m and the m1210 has several subtle improvements:

-page up/dn keys are handily placed next to the guide arrows. this comes in very handy for vewing web content.

-touchpad mouse buttons are no longer "clunky" and are soft to the push

-the ethernet jack is now in the rear as opposed to the right side

-the 9 cell "sticks out" less than the old 8 cell on the 700m

    I love my m1210. Anyone looking to buy a 700m? :D

i'd say, if ur w3j and m1210 are of similar prices, go for the asus, simply cuz it's an asus (and that the other is a dell)

the only reason why i got the m1210 instead was cuz of the price difference. i got mine during a promotion in HK where they upgrade RAM to 1gb and hard disk to 100gb (5400rpm) for free, threw in the webcam, 7400 go, t2300e, DL burner, 9 cell, 3 years complete cover and it came to around US$1,340, which is quite significantly cheaper than the w3j/w7j/SZ.

imho, w3j/sz look much much nicer, though my m1210 wouldn't be travelling much and so the looks don't really matter that much. if price wasn't an issue, i would have gone for w3j then sz then w7j then m1210.

Well, looks like this thread has died a natural death :)

Although it is still going strong at Notebook Forums.

I would like to thank all those who participated by voting &/or commenting.

The M1210 looks like a very capable little machine overrall. Some don't like it, but most do. I am intrigued & am very tempted to buy this little wonder.

My research continues........tho I would like to say that this forum & it's members is a great repository of knowledge & wit!! :D

No man should attempt to purchase a notebook without perusing this site!!

    Thank you all!!

I have a question for thoose of you that have this little baby. Does the size of it concern you? I am going to buy a laptop and i want a flexible one that is easy to fit in my bag and carry it around without thinking to much of it. At the moment i am choosing between the XPS M1210 and the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si1520. I am not going for the Nvidia graphics.

I don't like the keyboard and it runs hot. The screen and font could also be better.

The notebook is nice but I spent too much money on it. I maxed everything out, got the faster processor and everything came to 2,200... The good news is I use it mostly for work, so I'll be able to write it off, and maybe get back 600 bucks over 5 years... :(

It runs a tiny bit hot, but nothing too crazy. I find the keyboard to be perfect, so its more personal preference. The screen is great. Its very bright, and I dont think id want a bigger screen, it works fine. And what do you mean the font could also be better? That makes no sense. If you dont like the font, change it!

And the keyboard seems to have a little flex on the right side. If you press down certain keys, like ; or '' the other keys sink around it. I dont even feel it when typing. It makes them sink, but they arent pressed down enough to type the actual letters.

If your not gaming at all, 1GB is plenty for your tasks. If you are going to be doing intense video editing or audio rendering, then considor getting more RAM.
