I have a Sony SZ160 with the first gen Core Duo processor T2400 at 1.83GHz. Truth be told it's a great laptop but I'm thinking of giving it to my mom as she needs a new computer and picking up the M1330.
I would get a pretty basic config including the base T5250 1.5GHz processor. My question is if the T5250 1.5GHz Santa Rosa is a substantial step up in processing power compared to the 1.83GHz T2400 even though it's the base Santa Rosa processor.

All else (ram, harddisk) being the same the T5250 performance is below your T2400. You have a core duo and a core 2 duo is about 10-15% faster at the same clock speed. So 1.5ghz + 10-15% = 1.65-1.70ghz. It is a step down and the higher FSB wont help it.

One slight addition to wave's post is that the core 2 duo will be more efficient at its job than the core duo because of the new architecture it has but at that speed you will not really notice the difference.
