I keep hearing how big and heavy it is. Is it that bad? Because I'm going to be carrying it a lot around campus from class to class.

    I guess I could use a workout though ;)

It's big and heavy. Sure you could tell yourself you need the workout. But eventually, you're going to get annoyed and just leave it on the desk.

Honestly, I've never brought my laptop to school on a daily basis anyhow.

Yeah hopfully I can keep my working out in the gym.

My bag for it is one of those backpack types, so that should be better for carrying it.

It's not prohibitively large, but it aint no lightweight.

At guesswork, it's like carrying about 2 copies of the argos catalog. If you live in the uk, that is.

I heard it's 7 pounds. I use to be the kid who loaded all his books in the back pack.

It's a bit under 7lbs, but with the adapter, a mouse and everything else you need, it adds up very quickly. I have a 5.4lb notebook and it gets heavy after a while of commuting. Granted, I use a messenger bag which isn't the best for back support...

True... Slap a college text book or 2 in there and that might be crazy for the average joe.

yeah talk about it, my vostro with the power adapter, an mouse and the 4 lb. prof Targus laptop messsenger back addes up the stunning 12 lbs! Carried it around school for one day and I offically call it in and left it on the desk now. :D

It's heavey but very well built, so personally I don't mind that much as built quality > portability for me.
Oh and a word of advice, don't use a messenger/one strape style bag to carry your vostro...IT KILLS. lol

Heavy. Why not get a 14?

Remember, the 15.4 machines are about the same size as the old 4:3 17" machines. They're just too damn big for me and I wouldn't want to carry them.

its not THAT bad, fits in my backpack nicely. You THINK it's heavy, until you see other people dragging their 17" laptops. hmmmmmm

I had a 1420 for a bit before returning. I ended up getting a HP6500t 15" instead and its about as portable as the 1420 was. The Inspirons are heavier then average. I feel I have not compromised much in size/weight by going to a larger screen with HP. If the 1420 is comparable to a 6500t in bulkiness, then I can only imagine the 1500/1520 being nothing less then a tank.. But I have not ever handled a 1500. But the 1420 was not light or thin.. not even close. I think HP has a better design and shows no flex in keyboard or screen that I can see/feel. As far as so called build quality on Dells.. my first had a crack in the back of lid. The whole hinge assemblies looked pretty weak on the dells. I am not sold that dells are build strong because of the use of magnesium alloy and because they are heavy. Plastic composites are already known to be as durable with the benefits of reducing weight. The only advantage to going with the 1500/1520 is for the GPU and maybe the higher res display. But the Hi res displays with dell are a crap shoot and probably not as nice overall as a good matte or wxga screen. I think part of the reason for the 1500 bulkiness is to make room and keep the faster 86xx video card running cool. If the faster GPU is something you don't need, then I suggest looking at other notebooks that are more portable. The HP dv6500 with hi capacity 6 cell battery is considerably more portable then dells 1500. You also give up HDMI output with the dell.. something that over time, will be more future proof then a faster gpu... which will at some point be outdated. Having HDMI will probably be something you can use long after a video card gets outdated with newer games.
I think this video really shows the differences: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQB0-9g5H_c
