Curious.......

15-18 per day
-
You forgot to put 24 hours.
Both my laptops are on 24/7
My 9300 gets action from 7pm-1am and I have it set to turn off LCD when lid is closed and turn off Hard Disk Drive after 1 hour.
My D620 is always on during work 10am-7pm and standby the rest unless I am on a trip. -
At least 12 hrs.
JC -
About 14+ hours. Used to leave it on 24, but now I turn it off bedtime.
-
what exactly does the "Turn Off Harddisk" setting do?
-
as long as I'm on!
-
Wow I read somewhere here that laptops hardware are way more weak then regular desktop hardwares... keeping it almost 24hrs on isnt a line up of destruction for a notebook ?
-
Hey, I ran my laptop for 12+ hrs per day for at least 2 yrs now, and its fine.
JC -
Usually somewhere between 10-18 hours daily. Sometimes for a couple days at a time.
-
Anywhere from 4 to 6 hours a day, depending on how much work/school there is.
-
Varies: When downloading large files I leave it on till its done, has been up to three days. Weekends or when I don't have class its on all day. Days I have class its on ~4-6 hours.
-
My laptop is not working only when I'm walking with it in my backpack to school. So...I'd estimate that it's on for about 23 hours/day.. Is that bad?
-
I see lot of people here have voted over 6hrs (including me). I only have a notebook, so it runs more than 6hrs on average and sometimes runs for few days continuously for downloading (mostly).Who here has used a notebook extensively like a desktop for a long period like a year or two? Just curious....
-
I have a E1705, I had it for about 2 months now and It's On most of the time. I shut it of for about 6 hours max. I do alot of video encoding. Once I had it on for 3 days straight encoding videos with CPU usage 90-98% all the time.
I'm very happy with my dell so far -
We have 3 laptops at home--that of my wife stays on 24/7, because she doesn't move it. Mine stays on probably 23/7 because I travel with it approx. 1 hour a day. The other one is also most of the time on as I have torrent downloads on it.
Besides, I always lived with the belief that Hard Drive gets "shocked" every time a computer is turned on, so it's better for it to stay "on" all of the time. -
24/7 .. i often left it on for downloading.
-
It's almost 24/7.
-
almost 20+ hours on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends. I have times when my laptop was on for 30+ days and it works fine.
-
If I am away from my computer for a few hours and I go back to it and access something that is not on cache or ram i notice a lag for when the Hard Drive spins back up and access it.
On a side note, the reason why I leave my notebook on 24/7 is that I have a warranty on mine, If your notebook is going to die on you it will be during the first month-2.
I would rather have my laptop die on me during my warranty than after it.
My first notebook I had/still have I babied it and after my 3 year warranty was up something went on it. I would turn it off right after I got done using it, sometimes didnt use it for a few days, and tried to take as much care of it, now I have a large dead paperweight and regret not using it as much as I should have.
I treat all my notebooks as if there portable desktops. -
About 18 hours. I run BOINC with Rosetta@Home once I get home from school and overnight.
-
used to turn on 24/7, now cut down to 12 hours, will hibernate it when attending classes..coz afraid something bad might happen. @_@
-
I don't have mine yet... as long as it works properly (it's an open box model) then I should have it on at least 12 hours per day
-
My D420 is on 24/7 while I put my MX7515 into standby at night. I use the D420 to download anime off torrents so it has to be on. Im not too worried about it dying since I have 3 year warranty on it.
-
Ahzuz... I like the theme of this post, unfortunately most people (esp on this forum) use their computers more than six hours per day. The poll is rather useless for gathering quality information.
I'd suggest starting a new poll/thread with 6 4hour segments... Do the honours! -
My previous laptop was on 24/7 for over 4 years with no ill affects. I keep mine running all the time. LCD gets turned off after an hour and I don't bother turning the HD off. I have Complete Care until 2009 so I'm not worried.
-
Work laptop is 6+ ...
Home is probably 1-3 on a weekday.
I just averaged it out to 3-6 -
6 - 12 hours a day for almost 2 years now and no problems.
-
On average my laptop will be on for about 2 hours because when I have no real need for it I turn it off. When I do need to use it it only takes about 20 seconds to boot so i see no real reason to leave it on.
-
yea, mine is all on all the time. After I bought my M1210 (which replaced my ancient Inspiron 8500) my desktop promptly died on me, and considering how much the M1210 cost me, I don't really have the money to get a new desktop this is essentially my main computer for school/work/home so it does everything for me. I do all my programming, all my downloading, all my entertainment needs, you name it. (thats why I love my M1210 =D)
I am like a few you, and are wondering if a laptop is designed to be used this heavily like a desktoo -
Abt 6-10 hours on weekday, and 1 hr on weekend...
I got my desktop on weekend, and I always download w/ my destktop thr VNC. -
my m1210 stays on at least 6 hours a day.
my dell E1505 is on 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
no stability issues whatsoever. -
Metamorphical Good computer user
Way more than 6 hours. I do shut it down when I'm not using it for a long spell. Eight hours sense boot up and Full Metal Alchemist OST 3 is coming out of these speakers.
-
Well depends...in Summer I use to play CS:S and Browse NBR for about 6 hours
Now that I have to study, I only use if I have to, or to play Poker or HL2.
3-6 hours. -
i had my laptop on almost 24 hr everyday since 2003... it still works fine, but the crappy NEC DVD burner doesnt burn or read DVD anymore
-
Mine is on for about 3-4 hours a day, but is in hibernation for the rest of the day. Weekends it is on at least 6 hours.
-
i have a sony vaio fxa47 that i've had for 6 years running 24/7. this is a superb machine imo for the value i've gotten out of it. i run this as my mail/web/ssh server so the only time it goes down is when i relocate or when i need to upgrade the kernel. i'd be afraid to put windows on it. currently, it's been up for 2 months. w00t!
[loki@baphomet ~]$ uptime

Until I had to restart my E1505 for a windows update I cant actually remember the last time it was turned off. I would have to put it at 2 or 3 months 27/7 that its on. I normally have it set to turn the monitor off after 1 minute unless I am sitting down then I set it for longer. I use mine for doing alot of downloading and also I run the Seti @ Home with BOINC.
I would say that the design quality and quality of parts in a laptop is good enought to treat my laptop like a desktop...which I do. -
24/7 - Always On
-
-
10-20 monday thru friday, weekends are inconsistant.
-
Oh goodness. I'd say I have my laptop on between 16-24 hours of any given day. There have been times (when I don't need to take it to class) that I'll leave it on for several days at a time.
-
my 700m stayed on since feb 2005 24hrs a day except for restarts, and sometimes while im travellng and its still running strong.
How long (average) does your laptop stays on per day ?
