I recently ditched my desktop to get myself the m1710. Now I'm used to leaving my desktop on at night with BT on. I'm just not sure whether it's such a good idea to leave a laptop on for the same extended period of time. With the screen off, would leaving the laptop on cause problems in terms of heat, shortened lifespan etc? I've left it on all night yesterday and there was no problem, the fans were set to low when i start it up again.

The fans are really quiet on this thing though as a side note. I'm used to the 4 fans on my desktop and I can't even tell the fans are on when I walk into the room. Amazing.

    m1710, 2.0 gighz duo, 1 gig ram, 7900gtx, 60gig 7200rpm

Its fine to leave it on

Just make sure it has enough ventilation. A good place to leave it is just on a desk, with nothing in the background running. Just whatever you need to have on, let that run.

Other than that, you should be fine

I think the op stated that he's leaving it on all night because he's using BT (BitTorrent)

As long as the laptop is on a surface where there's adequate airflow, nothing will happen. That's why there are fans in a laptop.
