I've had my current laptop (Acer Aspire 5051) for 8 months, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I'm only upgrading to enable me to play better games/games at higher settings.

As technology advances so quickly, and gaming laptops outdate quickly, I thought I should ask how long you keep your laptop for.

I see some people keep theirs for 5+ years, for me, the most would be 2 before I would have a compulsive urge to upgrade!!

Every 3 years seems like a good balance between new technology, new operating systems and new games.

Thats why i've just bought a core 2 duo, with vista, and call of duty 4

    ^^

Is it not a pain in the arse installing all your software every few weeks + isn't it rather costly?

While I switch laptops every 3-4 years, I physically keep the older machines indefinitely.

My rationale is to buy the best specced machine possible in the form factor that I want, this helps me get the longest lifespan out of it.

I'm currently at month 41 but reeeallly want a new machine now (waiting for the next MBP refresh). My little vaio s1xp still does the job, it ran oblivion and COD4 fine for me so I can wait a little longer.

I think 2-3 years is a good turn around point. You can still get a decent resale on them at that point and purchase a new one for not much more money.

My one is three years old and still love it... (HP dv1240us) Thinking about an XPS 1330/1530 though :)

I had my Dell 600m for 4 years and 8 months. It's still running great...but Ijust received my M1330, because my dad wanted me to upgrade at the same time as his desktop and put my laptop on the same account...*shrug*

I'll likely (hopefully) have this one for 4 years or more as well.

I buy a new one and sell the old one at least every 9 months. Finding the right deal and selling the old one while still under warranty I figure costs about the same as buying a new one every 3 years. So why not always have the latest and fastest and thinnest and longest lasting battery? Congratulations on all your antique notebooks. You should put them in a glass case or something.

Probably about 3-4 years. I have no need to always have the most powerful laptop. I reserve that for my desktop :)

My 1530 would be a desktop replacement. I buy every 3-5 yrs. depending on "might be" obsolete components. I actually don't buy cheap for this reason. I'm planning on an H20 but might be encourage to build my own, since that one would be way to expensive to buy for a $5000. Building it would be cheaper with the same high end system.

If you are a gamer, and always want a top notch gaming notebook, it might get very expensive to fallow the trends of new game engines,..
I don`t have such problems, cos I use only workstation notebooks, and use them till the software I use runs fluid on it,... when I see a fall down I know it`s time for upgrade...
    mostly every 2,3 years....

I have my current laptop for 1 year and 1 month, and still going. I keep a notebook for about 2-3 years. I don't want mines to be outdated that much.
