My laptop is 4.5 years old, and except for diagnostics utilities, Dell hasn't updated a driver since 2007.

For instance, I know according to Intel site, that the Intel Pro Wireless card is outdated.

Is it necessary, or wise, to download the manufactures drivers in a Dell machine? In particular Intel and Bluetooth drivers. Where can I find Bluetooth drivers? Their website isn't very much help.

On a related topic, my device manager comes up with a "cannot install this hardware" every time I try to update drivers even though I know they are outdated.

Usually untill they stop selling that particular model...

but hey.. its better than hp... that barely releases any new drivers even while they are still selling those products...

In a way that makes sense, however I did have a 3 year warranty.

Do you think it's safe and prudent to update my drivers through the manufactures websites or through a third party such as Uniblue Driver scanner?

Depends on the component the drier is for. Sometimes any driver will work, other times the OEM may include tweaks that enable or disable functionality. Note: if you try to get tech support, they will force you to install the most recent version available on their website because it's "known good."

I had an inspiron 1420 with a 7 year warranty.. they stopped driver updates in 2008.. but I still have 3 years left of warranty. I had to use studio 14 drivers for windows 7 support.. it was still a bit flaky.. Just sell the system and get a new one. :)
