I placed my order from Dell Outlet last night, and got confirmation. Late today, my status changed to "shipped" yet I still havent got a tracking number. My invoice says that the carrier is UPS, do they take a long time to give out things like this?
Shipping Method: 3-5 Business Days
Shipped Date: 11/30/2007
Est. Delivery Date: 12/5/2007-12/7/2007
Carrier: Data Temporarily Unavailable
Tracking Number: Data Temporarily Unavailable

I ordered from the Dell Outlet 2 weeks ago with a 3-5 day delivery from UPS. I never received a tracking number the entire time, status stated shipping but it always said temporarily unavailable for a tracking number. I received my notebook in 4 days.

Same here. Ordered new laptop last week. Status/shipping info must be out of service. You'd think tech co like Dell would fix that?
-
HP, Intel, IBM, Toshiba, Sony, etc are tech co's! They all design/make hardware and/or software solutions for things...DELL does non of that!
You might not think that HP is a tech co (by my definition), but they DO have research labs, AFAIK, DELL doesn't... -
Tech side from the Info Mgmt stantpoint and get IT to report it properly. Seems like a little html coding to me...
-
I know I shouldn't worry, but the fact that I don't have a tracking number is a little worrying....Come on Dell, get your crap together!

booboo12, if you haven't gotten the system yet shoot me the order number and I'll be more than happy to check the status for you. If it has shipped I will be able to find the tracking number with no problem at all. If you have any questions on the system or the shipment I'll be more than happy to answer them for you.
H3rmaN, Dell does indeed have an R&D department responsible for designing new computers. We use industry standard parts for all the computers, and most parts are just ordered from the manufacturers (LCD panels, video cards, drives, etc). We also have to do designing and testing to ensure the system we want to build will work as intended and then get the motherboards made to our specifications (usually from two or more manufacturers) all before we can begin manufacturing for sale to customers.
Our process is indeed similar to "build it yourself". Once we have the system designed, and the parts required are available, each system is built to order per the customers request (e.g., memory amount, drive size/type, CPU, etc). Indeed Dell started as nothing more than a guy buying parts and building computers for people. We have moved way beyond where we started, however, and I think the M1330 and Latitude XT notebooks or the new XPS One desktop are all examples of systems that are more than just parts taken off a shelf and put together.
If you guys have any other questions for me I'll be happy to answer them.

Hi Larry,
Do you answer queries for Dell India too?
If so, can you please tell me if we can track the shipment through the courier site if the Order status is "Ship from factory"? Or does it have to be in "In Transit" status for tracking?
Any help would be highly appreciated
How long does it take to recieve a tracking number?
