My order has been in the 'Pre-Production' stage for about 3 days now. Before I start to get worried, can all you who've gone though this process state how long each stage of your order process has taken?

    Many thanks.

+1 Rep for answering first Brian.

What I really wanted to know was how long did each stage take ie: Order Processing/Pre-Pro/Production/Shipping Prep etc...

I ordered mine on 7/11 and by the next day (maybe sooner) it was in production. It has been in production (estimated ship 7/25) since then though.. :(

    EDIT - 1520

Bob, I don't know why your laptop (1520) would still be in pre-production for 3 days. The good news is, it's out of order processing, which means your payment and everything is fine.

I estimate the pre-production to end tomorrow? by friday at the most.

I estimate your "in-production" build to be around 5 days or so. Than you go into testing, which takes dell only a couple of hours.

What I have noticed is..while your laptop is still "building", the last day or so your laptop was ACTUALLY testing. Dell has to check in all these laptops by barcode for testing. There is a queue time to process all the scanned barcodes before they update to the website, same with any company (like shipping companies) that scan barcodes. So within that 5 days, you will have tested and built and made it into the boxing stage.

the boxing has been said to be anywhere from 1-4 days TOTAL. Than your laptop will ship to you.

I know for a FACT the build stage is extended and does not PRECISELY change when it is scanned to be tested. So while you hear "your system is in the build stage", take into account it is also testing during that time. Good luck on your order.

ah my bad. i didn't read your question right the 1st time  order processing for mine took only a few hours then it went right to production, i didnt even notice a pre-production status. within production it was about 4.5 days and then it shipped on the last .5 day. i think the boxing stage was only that .5 day which turned into only a few hours. i checked at 1 point it was boxing and then another hour or 2 later it had changed to shipped.

    Thanks Bob!

mainly those were all ESTIMATES. I ordered mine on the 7th, and it is boxing today the 18th. That's 11 days "in-production" INCLUDING testing. Lastnight my wife checked the order at midnight. It was still building. This morning it was boxing which proves they almost skip the testing update on the phone.

Keep in mind, I knowingly ordered the screen I did with a "3-4 day delay". Take 4 days from 11, you have 7 days (business) in-production/building. The only problem is the weekends. Those estimates were definatly ABOUT right, and I hope you receive your laptop in perfect condition and you are happy with your purchase.

By the way, please get back to me here or via PM and let me know when it goes into production. You can also PM me your AIM name if you have one since I almost always sit on aim with nothing to do.

Ok, get this. After doing some detective work, I've discovered that my 1520 is actually in production. Here's what happened...
When I ordered my Lappy the Dell rep gave me a discount off of the regular price. How he did this was by ordering the lappy at the full price, and then discounting it off the back end (ie:after the order was placed) essentially canceling the original order and reinstating the discounted one. So what happened is apparently I have two orders in que, one full priced 1520, and one discounted. The fully priced order is now stalled in billing not pre-production (hopefully being deleted, I'll have to follow up with my Dell rep about that), and the discounted 1520 is well into production. Confusing, but good news for me.

Sorry to piggy back bro but does anyone know why mine would be in 'pre production' for 7 days (5 business)? Is that normal?

I think their order status system is all screwed up. I ordered a 1500 on 7/10 and if I call now, it still says it's in pre-production. I placed another order for a 1400 on 7/16 (at 10:30pm est) and 10 minutes after placing my order, i called to check on the status and it said it was already in the build stage. Something is definitely screwey with their system.

Shlurpee, I'd suggest checking your actual account at Dell.com/.ca. That's how I got to the bottom of my order(s) status. Did you get any discounts? Perhaps your Dell rep used the same method of discounting as mine did via ordering twice and canceling the more expensive one (I can't for the life of me figure out why they do that).

probably takes 1 week to go from start of production to delivered to your house.
I've had Dells deliver laptops within 1 week from ordering to delivery.

Sorry for another piggyback, but I am seriously worried. My 1520 is listed as being in pre production and has been for 2 weeks.
Starting to get really annoyed and worried. I called Dell 5 days ago and they said that my order was in production, but my online status check says it isn't. Who do I listen to?

Call the dell order status line and see what it says, it's usually more up to date.
Mine went backward then forward really quick, Was in build stage from Thur - Sat morning, then went back to kitting all the way to boxing in about 8 hours time.

For me I went immediately into build, took 8 days to get into testing, 2 days into boxing, and who knows how long before it finally ships (I've read about some people who have been stuck in boxing for at least a week for the m1330)

Well, I've looked at the Dell website, its around mid day here and my 1520 has gone from two weeks of preproduction through all other stages in around 3 working hours. Dare I believe it? :)

Mine's going pretty fast. It completed 3 shipping stages today (cleared custom, arrived at Australian main hub, and dispatched to local courier). Should have it tomorrow. I hope my mom's home to sign for it, I'll be at school all day. Details on all of my stages in signature.

Should I be worried if mine still says "pending"? I did order it on Sunday 7/29 and I suppose it does take a business day or two to process. All of my info is legit and I'm paying for it outright. I'm one of those types, I'm sure like many of you, who will be monitoring every aspect of this production like an anxious husband views sonograms of his expectant wife.

What was the longest anyone sat through a "pending" stage?

I ordered my mines on 7/26 and it went into "in production" stage on 7/28. According to Dell it says that they will confirm with you within 1 business day. So I think it'll probably be in production by tomorrow.

Gorman, you might want to call and check to make sure, but everything should be alright. I ordered my 1520 on 7/24, and was given an estimated ship date of 8/10 with free 3-5 day ground service. Used Dell's online chat service today to talk to a CSR and was told that the WXGA+ (1440*900) screens were back ordered, and that they would upgrade me to overnight shipping free. Still quoted a delivery date of "on or before 8/10". Might wanna give them a call or try the chat and see if you can get delivery bumped up (this applying to all who haven't yet received their laptops...). Just a thought !

I also talk to a csr today, because my est. ship date is thursday, and it is still in the build stage. He told me there no delays right now. And how do I know if it is a 1440*900 I know it is a wxga?

Becky84 - if yours is a wxga and judging by your signature it is, then you are getting a 1280 x 800 screen. wxga+ would be the 1440 x 900 and swxga+ is the 1680 x 1050. As for my order, I will give it one more day before I start ringing all the bells of CS. I ordered the 1440 x 900 glossy, so here's hoping it has no delay issues or grainy texture when I finally get it. It seems the most recent batches of screens are better than the first set.

    Gorman,

Your screen is the same as mine (WXGA+ 1440x900 glossy). The part is supposedly backordered for 10-14 days. If you do wind up talking to CS, it's really nothing at all to get the free shipping upgrade, so I'd ask about it. Good luck!

I ordered on July 15th and I've been in build ever since. I know my WXGA+ screen was a backordered at the time of my order, but they've been shipping some out since then. Also, I checked sometime last week and the order page no longer listed the WXGA+ as something that would delay a new 1520 order, so it better not still be delaying my order.

I've heard all sorts of things have been backordered at some point or another from various people on this forum. Hi-res screens, colored lids, webcams, 7200rpm HDDs, EPP customers getting put at the back of the queue.. All of these things would affect me. :(

My estimated ship date hasn't come and gone (yet), but it's only a week away and by most accounts around here, if it doesn't ship weeks ahead of their estimate, it will be delayed. Yuck. I wonder if I should call/chat and check up on it to make sure nothing goofy is going on with mine.

So after checking online and calling for my order status, I find out the order I placed never "pushed through" their system. :( I received an instant e-mail response acknowledging receipt of the order but no one can find any info about the order I placed. Even the Purchase ID # gets them nowhere. Spoke with India for 50 minutes trying to build the same system but they wouldn't honor my EPP discount. I'll place another order online. I'll give them one more chance.

No one's CS experience should be this bad.

I would try coupon code TG60$CZNQ0BQ2R. I had a 1521 on order through the EPP program (huge mistake), and came across the above coupon for $300 off any Inspiron system of $1299 or more. Some sites say the coupon expired on 7/26, but the site I had gotten it from said 8/2. Worth a shot! My order is speced in my sig. Cost me $1153 with a free upgrade to overnight shipping.
