Charging stops when the battery is full, so you can leave the AC plugged all day if you want. Charge it whenever it's not at 100%, I'm pretty sure all Dell batteries are lithium ion, which don't have a memory effect. You can charge the battery while the notebook is on.

the battery guide doesn't answer his question, he is talking about the very first charge. I've read that li ion batteries should be charged fully before the first use.

New Li-Ion batteries don't require any special break-in or priming (unlike nickle based batteries). If it's not charged when you get it, put it in the charger. It'll shut off the charge when it's full, you can't overcharge it. My battery came fully charged. Don't let it run down though, that's bad for the battery.

If you use the battery a lot, charge it often, no need to wait for it to run all the way down. If you mostly use AC, then pull the battery out of the laptop. Laptops get hot with use and heat accelerates the aging of Li-Ion batteries. High levels of charge also accelerate aging. It's best to store the battery at 40% charge and low temperatures.

This website provides very useful battery information:

I suggest you read it fully.

LiIon batteries don't have a memory effect. So it doesn't matter how long you charge it. What does effect the battery life is how often you deep discharge and charge it. LiIon batteries last the longest if charged to around 50%, but that doesn't do much for portability.

I've owned dozens of notebooks over the years, and to be honest I laugh when I see people fully charge their batteries before even turning on the machine. It's just silly. Just use the machine and charge it when you can. If you have battery problems it will show up before the 1 year warranty expires. If you have a problem Dell will be more than happy to send you a replacement.
