I ordered a customized studio 15 directly from dell on july 18th with a design studio lid. It shows it is scheduled to be delivered on august 11th but it still shows it as in production on dells website when i log in. I was just wondering if that sounds right or if i should give dell a call?

Has it always said that? You can call them and ask them why it took so long. If it was delayed, then you should definitely give them a call and ask what the delay was for, and see if you can get some freebie or something out of it.

Yes it has always said that. If it hasn't shipped yet is it still possible for it to make it here(in iowa) by the 11th?

I see no reason why not. Assuming you took Dell's 3-5 day delivery, they'll ship it by the sixth (if not before), and FedEx (I think) will take over from there. If anything, they will take 5 days instead of 3 to deliver. The only thing I would worry about is Dell delaying production for you. You can try and call them, it's more likely than anything else they just haven't updated the status on your order, and it's already past production.

Is there any particular reason you have a range of delivery dates, and not a set deadline?

They don't hang around at Dell once they're built, so you'll see it as in production up to the day it ships. My guess is you'll see it flip to shipped on Wednesday or Thursday.

It was 9 days from the time I ordered to the time I got the laptop and I had the free 3-5 day shipping.

It shipped on that Monday and I got it on Thursday, so 4 days to ship.

Yes indeed, it took 3 weeks to get my Inspiron 1545. I wouldn't trust what the rep says, I would always go by the date that is on the order status screen. They are getting a bit more accurate now, but I believe they still factor in extra time - the theory being that it's better to have a system arrive early than risk it arriving late.

I ordered mine July 25th and it turned to "shipped" status yesterday (August 2nd). My tracking # was old and refreshed to the new one today (August 3rd) but so far all it says is that fedex has received shipping information. I want to know where in the US my laptop is! :p

Anywho, the ETA on dell's website used to say August 10th, and after it "shipped" it now says the 6th. Fedex itself says it should arrive on the 5th.

Who knows when I'll get it, though.

Will likely be before the 10th though I'd expect - which was the original date.

That is still a quick turnaround for Dell; especially at this time of year when people are looking at back to school / college / university stuff.

Ok so I just checked my status again today and it appears that it has been updated and now it's estimated to be here on august 28th! That's 17 days later than the first estimate. I will call dell pretty soon but what do I try to get them to do?

be polite - just ask them why it's been delayed. Tell them that's too much longer for you, and that you are considering cancelling the order if they don't provide some sort of remuneration. They may spec your laptop up or hook you up with faster shipping.

Ok so apparently my order status has been updated again to be delivered on august 18th which is much better. Do you think I should still call and ask why it was delayed or will it not matter.

if it's still delayed as compared to the first deadline you should go ahead and call anyway. See what freebies you can score. ;)

Try if you like, but I doubt you'll get anywhere. In the grand scheme of things, a week or so delay is not really that bad. I know people that have had more than a month added to their delivery time scales and managed to get nothing from Dell.

If you need a computer by a specified time, always buy from a retail outlet or mail order is fine, but the machine needs to have already been built.

It's the price we pay for being able to customise them as much as we can.

Mine was fast... processed the order last July 28. It was built and later on shipped last August 5 and is already in California Fedex distribution. Expected to be delivered within 2 days :)
