Well, I know my LCD has 7 brightness levels. Seems to me, though, you may want to go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, and find something in there, but I don't know exactly how off the top of my head. Or I bet there's some software that identifies all your components...

Anyways, I know it should be brighter than LCD. Also, check this out. Kinda cool. :D

Hmm, that's actually an interesting claim. I was under the impression that the number of display brightness levels depended on manufacturer implementation of display brightness control, but this guy could be right.

Most of the machines I've had agree with this rule. I've got a bunch of old Dells with CCFL screens and they all have seven levels. My Dell has an LED screen and fifteen levels. Nonetheless, I owned a Latitude XT with an LED screen for a couple weeks and it only had seven levels.

But I have not come across a CCFL screen that has fifteen levels.

My display has LED and there are 15 brightness levels.
The claim is correct as a friend has CCFL and has 7 levels.

I had thought mine was maybe just Dell, but then... without Quickset installed, I don't know why I still didn't consider other explanations. I think Linux is 7 as well, but the way Ubuntu is kinda buggy with brightness levels makes it difficult to tell. :D

thanks all! I am still not sure about this 15 steps thing as I have the 1735 but they didn't offer the LED screen as an option until the 1737. I got mine from outlet though so they could have replaced the screen I suppose, otherwise anyone else with a WUXGA CCFL screen which has 15 settings would blow this theory out of the water ;)

I am attaching a screengrab of my desktop which you can click on to see larger [as large as i'm allowed ;)] but the screen really is beautiful.

okay, mystery solved!! just got confirmation from another forum user who has a 2CCFL 1920 x 1200 LG screen that they have 15 brightness levels so it appears it is not just a feature of LED screens ! This maybe is peculiar to LG screens but I would have believed it to be LED so bright and clear is it with very clear whites [puts my inspiron 1300 CCFL into the shade for sure!]. thanks for the input, now might inform some others on other threads that they don't have the LED they think they have - which might disappoint them.
