Just got my new D820 with Vista Business last week, and there are things that I like in Vista, but I find so many chores and tasks are now so awkward such as file management. I thought I would give it a week, but when I find myself sometimes wanting to drop kick my new notebook, I start wondering if I should just hang in there and hope that I become more comfortable or bite the bullet and say adios until SP1 comes out and reinstall. XP had a much better learning curve going from 2000 Pro. How are you guys doing?

I will tell you in a few weeks. I just pulled the trigger on my D830 with Vista Business and have been very comfortable with XP Pro but figured I would give it a shot.

Wow man, I swear I was just about to ask the exact same question! The thing is, I've got my e1705 like 3 weeks ago with vista home premium, sure enough it came loaded with a ton of crapware courtesy of Dell... The system was working much much worse than my 4 year old machine which runs xp-pro. I called dell, and after spending like 3 hours with a tech. guy who tried cleaning up the crapware, it didn't improve things up. You can imagine my frustration, since my new powerful system (T7200, 7900gs, 2GB...) runs slower than an ill dog. I decided I have no choice, and I formatted and made a clean install of vista (also reinstalled MD3, no problem). This time things ran much better than the way it came from dell, but I have to say, its still no where near as fast as you would expect a system with these specs to run. Vista looks really cool, and it has some nice features, but I'm not sure its worth it for now. I'm seriously considering just like chevy05 to go back to xp for now, at least until sp1 comes out and maybe stables some things up. My cpu (both cores) never idle in vista, the RAM consumption is horrific, I thought people were exaggerating when they said you must get at least 2GB to run vista smooth, and I'm telling you, they were right on the money.
Bottom line, I'm also considering going back for now, reading this thread just makes the feeling stronger. I'm sure I'll be back to vista a little later on, but for now maybe its better sticking to xp.

I been playing Vista on the VMWare.

I heard users got problems with Remote Desktop.

I also have to click on the HELP screen to find things like how to map a drive and how to uninstall a program all in Vista. Its seem like a totally new animal.

I bit the bullet and installed Vista Home Premium over Windows XP Pro on my custom desktop (built August 2006). At first, I didn't like it. I let Vista run for a week so that it could do it's "optimization". As of now, I have no problems... er, just a small issue. But that has to do with nvidia drivers. Overall, performance has been just fine. Yes, it's a RAM hog, but I haven't had any BSOD yet. *knocks on wood*. Just takes time I guess to get use to. I kind of like the Windows Sidebar. Allows me to easily monitor my hard drives, CPU usage, RAM usuage, Network usuage, etc.

I program, game, download, office, internet, etc. on this machine and don't have any issues. All my hardware works just fine. No driver issues.

A few software/driver issues in the beginning, but I prefer it over XP now.
Love Aero, Search , Networking and Sidebar features. Getting used to UAC in Vista, prevents unauthorized program execution.

I have mine coming with Vista Home Premium and thought about this decision for a week. Now that I made it I am crossing my fingers. All I have is an old upgrade copy of XP Home Edition and the license has already been used anyway.

I just went back to XP after 6 months. My M1210 has a marginal LCD, so gamma, brightness, etc controls are vital. nVidia has not put out drivers with these basic controls yet. I also couldn't stand the constant "are you sure" nag screens every action I took. Bah! Drove me crazy. Just went back to MCE and love it.

At any rate, after you play a little with the machine the way it was shipped from Dell, I strongly suggest a clean install (that's reformatt not using the backup partition), it'll help boost things up.

I havn't installed Vista "yet" (will soon) but I like the dual-boot idea some people are doing. Means a reinstall, but you can keep XP for everything that you know works, and road-test Vista in the meantime.

Bought my M1210 from the Outlet with Vista Home Premium. Went straight back to XP when I got it. Vista made even the simplest tasks awkward.

Since I am on M1210, drivers for NVidia on Vista is crapped. I didn't like Vista because it uses more resources yet does not quite deliver anything worth while. I ditched Vista by doing a low-level format, and installed the Dell OEM XP that came with my Inspiron 1150. Since the OEM XP is installed on Dell hardware, no activation!! Yes!!

When I first got my new 6400 with a T2080 (2*1.73) and 2 gigs of ram & Vista I thought nothing should be able to slow this thing down. But my older 1.6/512 with XP does everything faster. I was supposed to sell my old one to help pay for the upgrade, but I am afraid to sell it because I use it as much as the new one. I have XPP VLK from work so its not like I am stuck with OEM install at this point. The concensus is to ditch?
If it wasnt for how good everything looks....

I put a clean install of Vista Ultimate on my E1705 and I love it. No problems. However, I left XP on my desktop because there are just too many great programs that will not run on Vista. Hopefully the software guys will catch up with Vista soon. Can't even run my AT&T DSL software on vista and they can't even tell you when it will be available. Oh well.

Well I wouldn't say I "went back to XP" coz I have not tried Vista yet. I ordered a D630 and I had the option of choosing between Vista and XP. I chose XP.

A few months ago I ordered a second hard drive got my D620, then loaded Vista Enterprise on it. I was ok with it, but as many people have learned, regular tasks which took no time became a little more clunky. It wasn't fun to learn a new OS like it was when Mac OS X came out. I also had to run a hack on my Active Directory admin tools and Exchange admin simply would not work. So I ended up yanking the Vista drive.

Now I am dual-booting with my D630, but Vista just does not do anything for me in a business environment. They can't change everything, cripple the administrative capabilities, then expect IT guys to want to buy it. I can only imagine giving it to some sales dude or accountant.

For work, it's worthless. I can get more done with a Mac. There, I said it.

I would like to do this, but I am absolutely TERRIFIED of screwing up my first laptop. I am learning a lot about computers recently from reading articles and sites I trust, but am still a total novice when it comes to partitions, tweaking with configurations and drivers, formatting, etc.

I still have my XP Pro/SP2 laptop, but am using my new Vista Home Premium laptop exclusively.

The only issues I have run into are:
    1. Quicken Deluxe 2001 will not save the data file
    2. There is a definite deficit in the Vista firewall and the alternatives are few and far between

    UPDATES:
    1. Quicken 2001 Deluxe is working fine since disabling Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    2. Now running these (all free):
      • PC Tools Firewall Plus
      • PC Tools Spyware Doctor
      • avast! antivirus

I am reporting in after less then a week with my D830 and Vista Business. I reverted back to XP. It was a little annoying with the SATA drivers, had to slipstream a ISO with Windows Install but I think it was worth it.

Well I reformatted my Dell D820 with Vista Business last week and installed XP Pro SP2. It would have been easier if Dell would supply a program that examines a Dell PC and tells a person what drivers are needed. I did a lot of looking in Device Manager to see what had drivers missing, and then played a guessing game as to what was I missing. But overall, I am happier with XP Pro. At least until Vista receives SP2 :)

Yeah, I also dropped Vista...too many issues with drivers (at the time, and it might be better now). That, and MS invalidated my copy that I legally purchased. Despite the fact that issue was finally cleared up, that left a bitter taste in my mouth for the OS...too bad, cause I was going to purchase another copy for my other computer, but now they are both going to stay on XP for sometime.

No problems with Vista up till now, although i hit 2.5 out of 5 incompatibilities from my school's software.

    - 2 unrelated to core modules software
    - 1/2 VMWare for my Linux admistration module, but have Virtual PC Express running in place of VMWare.

Even though Vista crashes out of places, i will still be using it because i believe that it will improve somehow over time.
