Son in law is wrong, the memory you add from elsewhere wont be coverd by dell, but the machine will be, same for the harddrive. Ram and hd's are way overpriced at dell, its usually best to buy it aftermarket. A larger hardrive wont give you any real speed gains, though more space is always good, the ram will make all the difference in the world, I highly reccomend an upgrade to 2GB as soon as you can.

Upgrading memory and hard drive will not void warranty unless you damage some components while doing so.
1GB of memory is enough for Vista, but 2 GB is recommended for smooth operation. If you want the best performance, then I recommend a 7200 RPM disk. However they are expensive and have a slightly heavy battery usage.

EDIT Oops, didn't see your post Iceman

Hard disk space and system memory has no relation what so ever. Upgrade the hard drive only of you need more disk space, as Iceman has already mentioned, upgrading the HDD will not improve performance much; However you will see a slight improvement if your current drive is a 5400RPM with less than 8MB cache and upgrade to a 7200RPM with 8MB of cache.

If you ordered 1GB of ram in two 512MB sticks configured in dual channel mode, then you will have to remove both of them to upgrade to 2GB. Refer the service manual for instructions on how to upgrade memory.

However if you are afraid of doing it your self or has no idea or experience with this kind of upgrade before, better let DELL take care of it. But it will cost you more.

You would be better off getting someone at a local computer shop or even a big box store like best buy to do it for you instead of sending it to Dell if your afraid to do it yourself based on logistics alone, not to mention cost. Its a 10 minute job max for both operations, for the hard drive, you unscrew 4 screws, slide the caddy out, remove old drive from caddy, insert new drive in caddy, slide back into notebook, replace screws, and your good to go. Ram is just as easy, remove the screws from the cover, release the tabs, pop out the old, line up then seat the new ram, replace cover and screws.

I sent you a PM TNbublles.
