I have received an Inspiron 1420 (Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1). I also found a harddrive partition (drive D), which is labelled as "Recovery", and there is a file called "dell/Image/Factory.wim".
All i want to do is make a dvd (which is including all the things necessary to make my laptop back to factory state).
I've read some of them, but i don't have any clues about it. Here is my question:
1. I confused about the right way to make it, because there are some alternatives:
a. create image/backup files of all partitions (dell something <x MB>, C, D) using acronis true image(*.tib)/norton ghost(*.gho), and burn it into dvd.
> because there is someone told me that i cannot make into factory state if i didn't backup all partitions in laptop, and i also cannot change the recovery drive letter (e.g. "D" to "Z"), since the <F8> will search for the third partition, can you explain this?
> can you give me details how to make the image and how to restore it (since i'm afraid the partition <e.g. dell something, C, D> in the image is different from the current state <e.g. C, D, E>)?
b. just burn the file "Factory.wim" into dvd, plus an imagex software.
c. burn all files and folders in drive D into dvd.
> how about Master Boot Record issues and others related?
> please give me the details (step-by-step), because i'm a newbie/beginner.
2. If i've found the correct one, how could i execute the recovery from DVD?
If you have experienced similar to me and you have successfully recovered the laptop into factory state from the DVD, please let me know the details to make it and how to execute it; you also can ignore the questions above since you succeeded in your experience.
Thank you for your attention. I will wait for your reply.
Best Regards,

Seriously, this could have implications. It's too easy to make a restore disc for a different version of vista for Dell, and I wont tell you how. Why not just use the restore discs that came with your pc? There's no need to make a recovery disc.

Actually i've got many discs, e.g. Windows Vista (1 CD) and other drivers + softwares (about 6 CDs), but my friends who is accidentially delete his recovery partition (drive D) said that he ever recovered the factory state using drive D, and it needs just only about 15 minutes.
And when his "drive D" had already been deleted accidentially, he used all the CDs that came from Dell for laptop inspiron 1420, and he needs around 2 hours (he also must choose which driver is appropriate to his hardware) to recover the factory state.
That's the reason, i want to make a dvd (which is including all the things necessary to make my laptop back to factory state). Thank you. -
If you have vista ultimate, CompletePC Backup works great, and I recommend it.
Otherwise, I don't know how to backup the recovery partition, as I've never had a need to, sorry I can't be of help for that.
