How to access desktop files on my Laptop?

Hey

I currenty have a Acer T180 with a 4400+ athlon, which I do all my major work on like downloading and stuff, which requires me to leave my PC on overnight.

Now I have a Laptop Dell XPS1530 which I use for watching movies and music and just general stuff.

How can I access my destop files on my laptop with using a flash drive all the time, is there a way?

My Lappy has Bluetooth, but my desktop does not.

It is all working by a Netgear router.

Can someone please let me know if this is possible.

 

not sure what you mean by "using a flash drive all the time" maybe you omitted "without" ?

you can set up a shared folder on your desktop (preferably not the desktop) and you should be able to access it with your laptop.

you will need to set up a workgroup
and give proper credentials and permissions, but it shouldn't be too difficult.
google "setting up a home network" or something to that effect

Or Just use Tools like HFS , it works great in WLan Networks

 

See im computer stupid when it comes to tech stuff.

I will check out that program and hopefully it will show me how or do it for me.

And by flash drive I mean, transfering my files from my desktop onto the flash drive and then putting them on my lappy.

Used that program and it gave me a IP address to get the files, but looked on my laptop and my IE or FF could not find the IP.

Any thoughts about this program.

It got to be simple, were my files get logged on line and I just put in the address and viola there are my files?

if your desktop is running an http server, than you will to open port 80 on your desktop firewall, let me just say you should limit it to the local network (192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x) and you should configure the http server on what files to share.

Yes he might have answered my question, but as I said im not very technical when it comes to computers, so when you talking about certain ip 80xxxx or 192xxx and to change the server to 80xxx I was kinda lost.

Im not sure how to do it, looked on line but everywere I look it seems quite complicated.

I know Im quite new to this, but just asking.

you want to access the files on your desktop in your laptop. the easy way to do it is to create a folder in your desktop and put inside it all the files that you want to share.
Once this is done then right clidk on that folder, select the sharing folder and activate the '...I want to share this folder...'
Turn both computers off, then ON again. Now if you go to 'my network places' from your laptop, you should be able to see your desktop in the list of computers and the shared folder you've created in the first step.

P.S. In order to share both computers need to be in the same workgroup.
This is how to do it under Windows XP.
1-right click in 'my computer' and select 'properties'
2- go to the 'computer name' tab
3- click 'change'
4- give a name to your laptop/desktop and change the workgroup name.

The proceedures described here should be the same for vista.

Seems ok so far, do I name my desktop and laptop the same name?

So anything I download I can just put the files in this sharing folder and viola I can watch all my movies and files ect...

Some of my friend make it sound really complicated, was never really tried it.

 

same workgroup different name

 

once you have the same workgroup names put all your movie etc. in one folder lets say media. (vista only)
1) right click on the folder and click 'share'
2) you will need to enable sharing in the Network control center there should be a line on the window I told you to go to. you might also want to turn off password sharing so you don't need to enter a password
3) once you have turned network sharing on you need to add a permission called 'everyone'.
4) then click share at the bottom right corner of the window and your share name will be your-computer-name/media.
5) the folder should show up in Network places.
this is instructions to do it in vista... which MS made easier than in XP.

what Operating system are you running on these computers as that will make a difference. if you are running XP on your desktop my directions won't work.

since both are connected to the router, one via wires the other wireless.

yes my desktop is wired without a wireless card or bluetooth.

And my laptop is wireless running off the router contected to my desktop

p.s. I pressed the share button on me desktop and now have two little men beside the icon, So I assume I can now see this on my laptop.

How do see the files on my laptop now?

Got a couple more questions now that I have figured it out.

1. Is my network still secure as I did state share with everyone, No one will have access to this file,, say like my neighbour.

2. So once I have downloaded stuff, i can just put all the files in this shared folder and it will update all the time will it? I dont have to keep updateing the file myself do I?

Once again guys you have all been great and you have really made a difference, now that I have done that my next step is world domination.

 

1. well if your wireless network is secured (password +encryption) then your neighbour should have hard time getting your latest downloads (unless he is a professional hacker). you can try and restrict the users that allow access to your shared folders, restrict permissions etc.
bottom line there is no 100% secure network.
2. sure.

 

God im over the moon.

No more blank dvd's or transfering files from my desktop to my flashdrive to my laptop.

Especially blu-ray files that would not fit on my flash drive.

NICE 1, I am now a media power house, unless there is more i can do.

no way around this one. a computer needs to be up in order to share media.

What about this other program that put my programs on a IP address that I would only know.

How does that work?

I tried using it earlier but my internet did not find the IP address 192.xxxx 2 ect..

the reason you can't access your files when the desktop is off is by enabling the file sharing you're actually transforming your desktop into a server.

If you want to access your files when ur desktop is off you have to get a 'network harddrive' something like these:

The network harddive will connect directly to your router just like your desktop. It will stay allways on to allow you to share your files between your desktop and laptop and any other device connected to your network.

... the above option is the greenest since a network harddrive / storage will consume less energy than a desktop or a laptop...

 

Looking at that, they can be a bit pricey.

Seems like Im being lazy,

Might just trasnfer the files I need onto my laptop before I shut my computer down.
