Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop and I wanted to know how to connect it to my HDMI TV so I can watch videos.

What specific cable would I need to buy?

    Thanks in advance.

Try a VGA cable. No, seriously, try a VGA cable. If your TV doesn't have a VGA input, you've got a problem.

As I recollect, the Inspiron 1420 didn't have a HDMI port, and there isn't any point in trying to convert a S-video input into HDMI.

You are correct. VGA only on the 1420. You can use a HDMI>VGA converter if the TV doesn't have a straight VGA connection.

As they said, your only option would be the VGA cable or the VGA-HDMI cable. The only thing I wouldn't like about the VGA is that the image might not look as good as it would with the HDMI cable.

    Correct, only S-Video and VGA.

How about convert S-Video to RCA? The OP might be able to pick up something like this cheaper.
