    1) Download and install the Synaptics driver http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm
    2) Restart
    3) Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings Tab
    4) Click on the Standard pointing device and click Disable

This works on my Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook, not sure if it does with other models.

Yes it works, though the drivers available on the Dell website (or the Dell drivers CD) work as well. To my knowledge, the only way to disable the touchpad is to use this software or disable the hardware through the hardware manager (ie right-click my computer, click hardware tab, go from there).

On the M70 the touchpad can be disabled through the bios setup (F2 on startup). Maybe the i9300 also offers that?

AFAIK, nothing else works. You can't disable it in the device manager or in the mouse properties nor is there a BIOS setting to disable it.
