** Check out post #5 for those of you who need part numbers. Also try PMing DELL-Chris M over dellcommunity.com to get the issue resolved!

This forum on Dell's site addresses your question. Lots of people have succeeded in getting their 64-bit Vista discs.
http://www.dellcommunity.com/suppor...thread.id=59950&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
I sent a PM to the guys at Dell handling this and am waiting their response. -
So far this is the info I found.
" 1. Per Dell policy, if you purchased 32 bit Vista of any version, you are entitled to the 64 bit DVD of the same version upon request, with the caveat that Dell does not provide complete 64 bit driver support for all platforms. XP 32-to-64 bit is excluded from this policy. Consumer (aka Home and Home Office) purchases are not eligible for the 64 bit DVD as of June 3. This is subject to change.
2. For customers in the U.S. region, your best bet to get the DVD is from tech support. It will help if you can use a little Dell lingo to point them in the right direction. If the agent seems unaware of the policy, or unwilling to dispatch the DVD, you might try quoting the Dell policy document something like this: "I know I am entitled to this DVD. If you would kindly check DSN policy document ID 158098, 5th bullet under Policy, first sub-bullet."
3. This is supposed to be a global policy, but I can not say for certain it applies in all regions, and agents in other regions may not be able to access the same internal document using the same document ID." -
Short answer, you can get it by sending a PM to Dell-ChrisM on the Dell Forums.

Good luck! -
Talking to a resolution specialist...disappointed I had to go this far. This guy swears it's not free and can't give it to me. He even said its not compatible even when Dells site tech-specs of M4400 clearly say Vista Business 64!
I finally talked some sense into him and the only thing stopping him is he cant find a part/item number for Vista Business 64-bit.
=X anyone have it?!
----------------------------------------
From DELL-Chris_M:
Part/Item numbers of 64-bit cd/dvd's:
"N172H VH64SP1, Vista Home 64bit
H073F VU64SP1, Vista Ultimate 64bit
JN198 VB64, Vista Business 64bit "
Man, that guy is cool. -
I agree, he deserves a fruit basket.
-
I have the part number, Ill get it to you tomorrow.
-
Lol, I have it already. Post #5 - but if you could confirm that would be great.
-
I just sent my info to Chris M on the site and he said my 64-bit DVD will go out tomorrow via DHL. -
He replied to me asking for shipping info
-
You're set man.

Got the order number as well.
I guess he's one of the good guys at Dell. VB64 will be sent within a few days! Order numbers on page 5 are indeed correct, after all, they were copied from a CHRIS_M post!

-
Sweet... let us know how it goes. -
My warranty expired so I can't get mine. (anyone with an alternative option? I guess I could buy it from Microsoft)
-
I got my 64-bit Ultimate disc from Chris the next day! I too am spending this weekend overhauling the lappy. Now to find the NBR 64-bit install/drivers guide....
-
When you install the 64bit OS version do you lose all data rpeviously stored on your computer.
I've heard problems about 64bit drivers - is this a hardware problem or a software problem.
Finally, can I run a 32bit software on a 64bit OS?
Thanks. -
-
Thanks for the response Signal2Noise...so it seems all factors considered, I probably don't benefit from 64bit OS since my main software are 32bit applications.
Thanks again for the education. -
the only real negative of 64 is mandatory driver signing, which is very hard on independent software developers and open source software -- MS really ought to be slapped for it.
-
mandatory driver signing? does this mean i cant use gfx drivers from laptopvideo2go and other sites?
-
Independent software developers? It's really hardware developers that need to make drivers.
Personally I consider the driver signing requirement a good thing. But you can disable it if you really want to. -
no, it does not mean you cannot use drivers from laptopvideo2go.com -- those are signed. and i mean drivers for things like RMClock, NHC, etc -- which are the only good control suites to step up and down the processor, etc. it is a royal pain.
@swarmer, i take it you never have actually tried, since that method has been disabled by microsoft for over a year now.
and i would also add that it is not difficult in the slightest for malware to have faulty signatures which stilll allow them to get loaded into the kernel... the ONLY reasons MS did this are for DRM protection and to stifle open source / independent software development. -
Programs like OpenVPN and Truecrypt are open source and use their own drivers.
-
so dell just cancelled the order they put in to ship me my 64 bit disc without explanation... i guess ill have to point them to their own **** guidelines.
edit -- they cancelled the order, made a new one, and it shipped today. -
I just got my copy and i sent the request saturday.....fast service
-

For what it's worth, I got my 64bit DVDs today.
-
Hi,
I'm trying to get the 64-bit Vista DVDs. I've tried searching for the Dell-ChrisM in order to PM him, but I can't find him. Is he still a member of these forums? How do I find a post by him in order to PM him.
Thanks! -
Read first post, follow the yellow bricks.
-
Ah yes, the point is to read details. Dell Community, not here.
Thanks a lot!
