My Inspiron 1520 just died on me, it apparently can't find the harddrive or any other bootable devices when I try to boot it.

This happend after I dropped the bag I was carrying it in, so I suspect the cable connecting the harddrive and the motherboard simply went loose.

Any insurance or anything of the such I might have had is long over, so I decided to fix it myself if at all possible, however I can't seem to remove the back of the laptop for whatever reason. I'm certain that I've removed all the screws, and yet I still can't get inside it  ... help?

The service manual is what you need to take your 1520 apart.

    Documentation

Apparently, if I were you, the fact that the laptop manages to start up, I wouldn't dissemble it but rather just remove the harddrive and hook it up to as an external onto another PC to test. The 1520 does not use a cable connecting the harddrive but rather, a PCIe slot.

This is a documentation of how to remove just your harddrive:

Thanks a ton, you pretty much saved my on this one :) Unfortunately, it'd appear that the harddrive is done for, so I'll have to find a place to buy a new one:/ Any idea what one with merely 60-150GB would cost?

    Hi,
Assuming you live in the US, then have a look what Newegg.com has to offer. Prices start at 36 USD plus shipping.
