    Tested to work with inspiron 630m/XPS M140, Inspiron 9300/XPS M170. ;)

Hurray :D ! I installed Media direct 2 on my Pentium M XPSM140/Inspiron 630m which came with older Host OS dependent Media direct version 1.
It works like a charm. I followed the instructions given here : Dell Media Direct 2.0 ... Running on 9300/XPS M170 @ www.notebookforums.com. That guy has installed MD 2 on his Inspiron 9300/M170 .

    Here is what I did
    1. I deleted all the partitions after Windows XP main partition (left everything unpartitioned after first active primary partition)
    2. Ran Media direct installation CD; it crated a 1.39GB partition at the end of the disk and copied all the necessary files. However if you have more than 1 partition after XP main it wont work (will give an error and exit)
    3. Copied taskmanager to the new MD partition (it appeared as X: in my case) while MD installer was copying files.
    4. Shutdown the PC and pressed MD button.

You can get the task manager buy pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and do what ever after that, get a Explorer window, install Sound/ Video drivers etc…

This leads me to believe that I might even be able to install MD3
