Is there any way of doing this? I know if I patition the whole disk using the mediadirect cd, then I can install the vista and mediadirect. however, i will loose the 10 g backup patition, I suppose.

And, there seems a limit on how many patition you can have on the HDD. is this ture? I can only have 3. strange. I want to release some space for a seperate data volumn , but the released space can not be allocated. is there any way around this?

will partition magic help to add more drivers?

I got a BOOTMGR missing error already! does this mean I had already lost the backup patition?

I had deleted the mediadirect patition, maybe that is the reason?

You may have played a bit before getting the answers i would guess. No, you cant do what you suggested. I understand what you want and that is to be able to go back to the factory settings. Get Acronis Trial and make your complete system backup before the trial expires. the backup is good forever.

then do a clean install as didcussed below.

    Later...

I have read your post :)

As I have vista ultimate, can I just backup the dell backup driver by a complete computer backup? will I be able to restall it later in that case?

Yes... you can go to complete PC backup and make a backup disk set of your system as you see it right now. probs later, just come back again.
