I have a Dell e1505 and would like to prep it for sale. Could someone tell me directions/software/forum that will tell me how to do this. I want to be sure that all of my info is erased from the laptop. It had windows xp (dell didn't include an original cd for xp) and I upgraded using a vista upgrade dvd (which I do have). What is the best way to do this? Thanks in advance!

Buy a full version XP or Vista disk.
Then put it in the optical drive & reboot you may have to change the boot order to boot from the optical drive first Then choose format not upgrade.

Since my laptop is licensed for a copy of xp (through the sticker on the bottom of my laptop) can I request a full version disk from Dell? Where else would I get a full version disk?

Cant you just use the image stored in the recovery partition? I thought it returned the computer to a factory state, deleting all information.

your info is never deleted unless you do a low level format, but even then, it is still recoverable :/

Yes you can request a copy of the reinstall CDs usually they might charge about $25, just call customer service and give them the service tag number.

But before you reinstall windows get a program to completely scrub the hard drive. For example: http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/drivecleanser/index.html

To clean up the HD and clear out your PII use DBAN...

    http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It will whipe EVERYTHING from your hard drive in a low level 3 run secure format. So there won't be any recovery partitions or anything like that present when it is done...

You should be able to get CDs from Dell? I saw a link to order them on their site somewhere, but maybe you can call them and get the same results.

Also, if your copy of Vista is an upgrade then it is directly tied to the license you upgraded. So you will have to sell that copy of Vista with the machine as you won't be licensed to use it on anything else.
