Bah, that's no silly question. It's actually quite informative, seeing as how you are concerned about your computer.
Try CPU-Z. Download link
Under the Mainboard tab, you should see 'BIOS'. It should list whatever version you have there.
Dell's BIOS updates are rather easy. Check out their Drivers & Support section and find your make and model. If you need an update, download the one listed and run it. It should execute itself and ask for you to restart your laptop.

When the machine boots up, it also displays the BIOS version.

do you know what is the latest bios for Vostro 1400.
Any issue with the latest bios? -
my 1520 came with A00 and i installed the new updated one A03

I think 1400 is on A01

I did not see any A01. Where are you guys seeing A01.
Also Vostro 1500 comes A00 as well
I checked 1520 it does shows A03 at Dell so I guess that is latest for Inspirion
