I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and stops responding during use, it does not freeze up totally, just the programs being used stop responding. Sometimes they will start back on their own after waiting a few minutes and other times I have to reboot. I have 61 processes showing with no programs opened. I have been told this is my problem. It also is slow to recognize a DVD inserted in the DVD drive as well as a USB memory stick. How can I make sure my laptop is running and working properly with as few processes running as needed? I have downloaded and ran every program I can find in relationship to this problem and everything checks out OK on computer. It also shows letters slowly as you type. This is not happening everytime but maybe 70% of the time i use a program involving typing.

My brother also has a 1501 with a similar problem. Could you post your specs for some clarification?

Are you on the default Dell install? If so that is your problem. You can use msconfig and uncheck things starting up.

It is hard to say unless you list all of the processes you have in your list. You should look each one of them up if you are unsure of what they do and see if you can disable them.

Is there a way I can copy and paste the process list here for you to see? I have tried and I can't figure how to copy them.

You'd have to paste screen shots.

Show us whats in the startup tab of your msconfig. (hold the windows key hit the letter "r" and type msconfig and hit enter). You will see a lot there. Post more screenshots of this please.

You can uncheck any or all of them. If you find a certain program you want to load on start isn't, then just recheck it.

well now that I have the processes down to around 42 at start up, I am still getting the occasional "not responding" while using the internet and yahoo messenger. Is there any areas that I need to look at to try and correct this nuisance?
