How do I turn down the volume of the "BEEP" made by the piezoelectric speaker in my Vostro 1500? In my desktop it is a simple "clac", in this Vostro is more like a battleship's horn.
I've searched through the bios setting but there's nothing in it. Is this somethnig that has to be done in windows?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, try to keep the caps key pressed for more than 15 seconds, and you'll know.
(BTWE, I already disable the acoustic warning for the sticky keys, it's just that other programs use the BEEP (Or should I call it "bell"?) to warn about certain errors.
Believe me, in the middle of the night, it can be a startling shock![]()
Not for the faint of heart.

I agree!
The name speaker in the thing is cranked, I panic every time it goes off trying to shut it up but you can't! It's a real pain in XP because I don't have the soudn drivers downloaded.
There has to be a way to turn the damn thing down. -
Have you looked in Control Panel? I don't have Vista to look at anymore, but in earlier Windows there was a Sounds icon in Control Panel that allowed you to mute or change system alert sounds.

That's windows, not the stupid integrated speaker that's used when no driver is present.

In the System properties, under system peripherals there is a system speaker. And it is possible to disable it. I wonder if there's a way to simple turn its volume down. Something below 80 dB wuold be nice.
I seem to recollect that my desktop speaker was loud, too. But I don't remember what I did to make it softer. -

This is the age old bell that can be heard by compiling and running the following C program
Code:#include "stdio.h" /* can't see the less and greater then signs in this forum*/ int main() { printf("/a/a/a/a/a"); return 0; }

In a BIOS, all the processes before booting windows, running the diagnostic tools.. theres no drivers loaded otherwise why would it use a integrated speaker on the mobo instead of the actual speakers..
That's the one me and Sredni Vashtar are talking about..
If it were a common option in Windows it wouldn't have been an issue to turn off or down, but it isn't.. This is something only done in a BIOS or with special software running in Windows to modify the BIOS.
When I say not driver present, that's just one scenario off the top of my head that this speaker will scream in. -
This is what you do:
right click my computer -> manage -> device manager
go to View -> Show hidden devices
under device manager go to non-plug n play
go to beep
disable baby -

When i go to Beep under device manager and i right click it, it says "Uninstall". Do i click Uninstall as I cannot see an option for disabling it.

A little bump to this awesome thread. I would actually suggest everyone to disable it, it's annoying as hell.
How to silence the "BEEP!"
