I use a Dell 640m (or 1405) with an external mouse most of the time. When I am typing, my figures often accidentally touch the touchpad and so move the caret. This is very annoying. Is there anyway to turning the touchpad completely?

If you go to the control panel and open up mouse settings, you should be able to disable touchpad.
