I currently owned a Inspiron 600m notebook and had been using it since a year and I had to admit it--- that i really love it - primarily coz of the light-weight and decent performance. But my needs grew and now I made an order for the Inspiron 6000 just before the Valentine's Day as DELL Australia was offering 25% discount as well as FREE double memory upgrade. After a few minutes of talk with the sales assisstant, I managed to make a bargain --- FREE upgrade to 80 GB HDD from 60 GB HDD, FREE Dell BlueTooth 350 module and ultimately a further $45 discount.
See the followings (DELL INSPIRON 6000)
Pentium M 760 (2.00 Ghz) 533 Mhz
15.4" WUXGA UltraSharp(1900 x 1200)
915PM chipset
1 GB DDR2 533 RAM
80 GB HDD (5400 RPM)
DVD +/- RW (Double layer)
128 MB ATI x300 video card
Pro Wireless 2915ABG dual band
SD card reader
Dell BlueTooth 350 module
9 cell 80 Wh battery
.............all for AUD 3000 (around USD 2300)
I am just wondering if it is worth the price....
i was particularly interested in buying the Sony FS series which have a 15.4" with the latest sonoma technology, but the screen resolution was just 1280 x 1024 and the price was around the USD 2400 with just 512 MB ram, but with GeForce display of 128 MB.
I wanted to know how is the new ATI x300 display in 3D games and other graphic intensive work?
How much performance can one expect between pentium M 730 (1.6 Ghz) to the top notch Pentium M 760 (2.0 Ghz)?
which display resolution goes well with 15.4" screen ---- UXGA (1920 x 1200) or the SXGA (1680 x 1050)?

Nice, lucky for you Australia got the good i6000 before USA did. The config is pretty nice, and definetaly better than the Sony FS. There are a few points I would like to make though:
1) Just FYI, actually the top notch processor is the 770 (2.13 GHz) but that doesn't matter much.
2) The MRX300 will handle if you don't plan on doing too intensive graphics work. Light gaming should work. On the same graphics note, it is good you decided to go for the i6000 over the Sony FS because that 128 MB Geforce Go6200 you saw, well, you may have found out already, but that is part of a new variety of cards from both Nvidia and ATi that are graphics "hybrids." Really, that is a 32 MB card (dedicated), and then it takes something like 96 MB VRAM from the CPU ram, so its 25% dedicated card, 75% shared memory card. The MRX300 is a real card with full 128 mb dedicated ram.
3) 1GB ddr2 533 ram, nice.

well i'll copy/paste what this guy told me (i asked him about the D810 with an ATI Radeon X600
***this was my question***

***his reply***
They're about CPU and GPU scaling in Half-Life 2, which of course
is more or less the basis for Counterstrike. These articles include
coverage on the X300, X700 Pro, 9700 Pro, and 9600XT. Note that in
general the Source engine favors ATI cards over nVidia.
An X600 would be:
-Much better than an X300 (notice the X300 is playable in DX9 mode
at 1024x768 at over 40fps in every benchmark)
-A little bit worse than a 9600XT
-Noticably Worse than a 9700 Pro
-Noticably worse than an X700 Pro
In other words, you're going to have fine framerates, I'd say at
least 50fps average in HL2. It's a good enough card that your CPU
choice could be the limiting factor. Also make sure to have lots
of RAM.
my advice, for paying for something that much, wait a bit for perhaps the 9300 to come out or is the 9200 (soon to be replaced) kinda big?

Yeah, personally I would wait for the 9300, a post in the Dell section said the 9300 comes out in 5 days. But if the x600 can't even compare to a 9600 XT, wow, I'd only feel safe with a top notch card, which brings me to a question. Does anyone know if they'll ever make a Mobility Radeon X850 like on the desktop series?

Yes, the 6800 on the 9300 does look promising so far...and I was also thinking, because in another post someone said the size of the card is based on ram, so if you have like a 128mb x300 card, you can go all across the 128 mb cards section (at least thats how I understand it). So I'm guessing its upgradable to the 128mb MRX700.

Just thinking it won't be that bad playing 3D games with my i6000 (yet to arrive) with the x300 dedicated video.
Also, I wanted to ask how will the WUXGA (1920 x 1200) fare with i6000 15.4" screen display? I read many reviews about WUXGA in i9200 17" being terrible, will it be more terrible in 15.4" inch screen?

well if you read what i posted up there about the ATI Radeon X300, this is what i posted...
An X600 would be:
-Much better than an X300 (notice the X300 is playable in DX9 mode
at 1024x768 at over 40fps in every benchmark)
-A little bit worse than a 9600XT
-Noticably Worse than a 9700 Pro
-Noticably worse than an X700 Pro
and for the WUXGA on the i6000, i think it would be the same as the i9200 (in my opinion), and also the fact everything is so small, i certainly wouldn't wanna squint just to see what was on my desktop or text on my browser and such (that is if you're a noob and don't know how to enlarge the font)[]
but MY QUESTION TO YOU IS: since i don't have a laptop, there are other screen settings than the 1920x1200 right? i think it would be real nice to have a WUXGA with a different screen resolution...MMM[:I]
well, hope i helped a little, take it easy[8D]

Inspiron 6000 (with GMA)
An author of i6000 wrote this in another discussion forum.....
"............This is for all you who said it couldn't be done
Granted this isn't the latest and greatest, but its what I play, so I'm pretty happy with the results. The integrated graphics chipset seems to hold its own. I was having problems with the audio for some unknown reason, but I started it up again just now, and it worked fine. I was running the game first at 1024x768x16 with low graphics, effect, etc quality, and then at 1024x768x32 with medium settings. Both of these ran very very well, definately playable, it was only at the high detail levels did the game begin to choke. Anyone who knows BF knows its a memory hog, you need a lot of it to play this game well. And I am running this game with only 256mb of 400mhz system memory! Half of that is going to the video card I am confident that once I get my memory this thing will be flying, which I'm happy about. I'm not a big gamer, but I do enjoy this game. Again, sorry for the ****ty vid quality, I can't do any better, just doing this for those dreaming of a new notebook and wantin something to look at. For anyone interested:
