Not how good the price was, not how great the specs were, not whether there was bloatware, not how good the tech support was, but the actual build quality. Has it held up well, or did you have to get something fixed?

Battery replacement doesn't count - that'll happen on just about any machine.

I have used my inspiron for about 2 months now, and there have been no problems :). Except the point where i had to restore my system cause of annoying spyware i was unable to get rid off.
This is my first notebook and i can say if i was to buy another one i would surely consider purchasing a dell.
    :)

Well I have 2 Inspirons, one has been fine for 3 years, the other one only had a issue with the modular DVD burner, which was a dude from the start, and an easy fix. And my desktop computer has been going strong for 5 years, other than a blown power supply within the first 2 months, otherwise perfect.

We also have at my work work at least 6 Inspirons, and 9 Lattitudes, and not one of them has had issues in the past 3 years. Now that is great!

OK, not bad. 70% no problems, better than I thought it might be with all you hear. And decent, quick service. Good enough for me.

Still five and a half years left on the poll if anyone else wants to contribute for posterity - by then it might be time for a new one.

About 2 years ago my friend bought an flashy Red Acer Ferarri, I remember the flashy red thing was given rave reviews. 1 months after the 12 month warranty ended the motherboard gave up. And now it is a piece of junk, too expensive to repair.

The story goes, my so called ugly dell Inspiron 9300 that everyone said was ugly compared to the Fararri, is still powering, and the flashy red Acer Fararri is now condemned to the scrap heap.

My DVD burner just went out on my 640m that I purchased in March of this year. I called Dell the day it broke, and they had a new one at my door 2 days later. Not too bad.

    Still runs 1 year+
Battery is pretty dead (very light use) but thats to be expected
Hinge is still nice and tight, runs fairly cool

Dollar for dollar, the best deal in town. And from our experience, all major brands demonstrate the same excellent reliability.

I had an Inspiron 500m which I bought in 2003. Last year one of its RAM module konked off. Overall I was quite satisfied with its performance. Recently I replaced the Inspiron with a Latitude D630.
