    Hey all...
Had my 1420 for about 3 weeks now or so... anyway... when i first got it... i didn't hear the high pitch whine.... BUT it all started last week... i think it just suddenly started... and MAN its annoying... However... its not THAT loud... but its high pitched.. and it hurts. I found a video doing some searching of the noise... and i don't know if the video has the volume exaggerated or not.. so I will post it here for you to listen.... Is the noise on your computers THAT loud? I just want to assess the seriousness of my whine noise... cuz mine is not that loud.

My 1520 had that, but I couldn't hear it unless I put my ear right next to it.
I don't understand why it beeps like Morse code instead of being a constant beep though.

I have the whine too in my m1330, I have resquested a swap a new m1330 to dell and I pray to not have it again. One thing I observed too is that now after a week the wine is louder and more annoying (in the begining the whine was harder to hear, fortunately I ask for replacement anyway)

yeah mine too... i didn't even notice it when i first got my laptop... but after a few weeks.. itsgetting louder and louder.

Jokerman.. how did you request the swap? Did you just call dell and ask them for one? I've had mine for 3 weeks now... is it too late for me? I do have 3 yr onsite warranty though...

I am from Spain, I am not sure that dell work in the same way in all of the countries, I think in USA there is 30 days to ask for a repleacement after that dell only will change pieces of the computer, I dont have idea in Spain I will call to ask about this question.
Anyway, what I did is phoned to dell, and ask for a replacement explaining the "whine effect". They said me that I need to talk to a technician first, they passed me with a technician, I explain again "I want a swap is an error of the micro, I doubt you can fix", anyway he tried it by making me disable somethings... the whine still there... and after speak with someone he said me "ok, you are right, we send you a repleacement". And I can take the computer till the new repleacement arrives. So we will see if there is still the whine.

    Good luck

That noise can drive a person insane. Definitely get a replacement and possibly some compensation for psychological damage due to the whine.

You know, that whine was hurting my ears, rather it was all in my head or it actually is causing damage, bottom line - I felt pain after enduring it for 3 hours. I was thinking, just let it screw my ear up and I'll sue Intel or whom ever is responsible. Hahaa..

RM clock solves the whine but someone needs to fix it.. It's been a problem with computers for years now lol..

I just called in to get a replacement... there's supposed to get back to me with the new order number... hopefully it will all work out. Has anyone gotten replacements before?? is this the process they go through by contacting you 24-48 hrs later about a new order number?

    thanks

After got it for a month, I thought I can stand the noise at first, but I was wrong. :( I can't even bring it to the class to take notes, nor I can bring it to library to study due to the CPU whine. People will keep checking on me and wonder what's going on with my laptop. Really embarrassing. I just called Dell tech support, and he said he will send me a replacement. Hope it won't happen again with the new one.

The whine is actually still present whether on AC or not. On AC, the computer uses a different power mode which somehow makes the noise louder. On Battery... it's not as evident.. but if you listen up close.. its making the same HIGH PITCH screeech... (but in a different pattern). Hard to explain.. but yeah... at least that's how it is on mine.

The morse code-like beeping is, if you had noticed, is the hard drive functioning.

The squealing is, of course, is the electrical interference of, what I believe, is the CPU. Reason why it may be loader when you are plugged in could be because it is throttled more than on the batteries.
