ok, so I finally got my Inspiron 1521. I hate it.
I consider myself a casual gamer, with WoW being my main obsession. This laptop, with stock video card, BLOWS. I have spoken to Dell, and I am returning this machine for a Dell Vostro<since they ship faster it seems> Any suggestions on specs? what i have specced out right now is :

    Dell Vostro 1500
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Business + Belkin Easy Transfer Cable
    15.4 in Wide Screen XGA+LCD Display w/TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability, w/ Roxio Creator
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT
    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Wi-Fi Mini Card
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Any ideas where to tweak this? I've noticed that they no longer offer the T7300 as an option of the Inspirons. Should i not order this? are they having shipping issues?

What were you expecting when you ordered your laptop with integrated graphics?

Get the Toshiba x205, or the P100. The x205's got the best DX 10 mobile GPU. But the P100 has an extremely powerful GPU. 7900GTX

you know, if I had wanted a bunch of ridicule, i would have asked arrogant 14yo's. I bought it because it's what i could afford at the time, and because i didn't have much choice. I'm certainly not expecting to be able to run high end 3d CAD programs, or even intensive games like Bioshock. I would just like to be able to play the only game that I enjoy, when i'm not in my 9hour labs for college.
Note that Dell didn't offer me the option to upgrade the videocard, nor did they provide me with any real info about the card that it came with. It wasn't until after i received the machine that i really knew how bad it was. And i'm unhappy with it's peformance, therefore I am returning it. The question was, will the machine I have specced out to, the Vostro be capable of my functions, as well as playing WoW and running Vista.

Maybe consider getting the T7500 processor instead of the T7300 if your in a rush to get it faster. I cant say 100% that the T7300 is causing delays, however it would "appear" it is.

And instead of ridiculing you, think of it as a lesson for the next time you decide to purchase a new computer. ;)

That should be more than plenty. You should be able to play the latest games with that graphics card as well.

You expect when you spend $800 or whatever to get a good computer, but I feel sorry for those poor suckers buying computers at Best Buy with nothing in them. But I know a LOT of people who primarly ONLY instant message/myspace/surf the internet/listen to mp3's and that's all they need.

if you wanna play games cheap, buy an xbox or a ps3

I payed 1500, not exactly cheap. the only game I play is World of Wacraft, and it's several years old. I think there's something to be said for not being 100% computer savvy. That's why there are sites like this. The point is to offer helpful advice. so far I've read 2 helpful responses. And 7 *******s. You people seem to have a worse track record than Dell CSR's. Perhaps a carreer change is in order.

And thank you very much for the advice. I will be ordering the vostro today. If anyone has any more constructive thoughts, I'd love to hear em.

Is there a reason you're getting Vista Business instead of XP Pro?
If I were ordering a Vostro 1500, I'd get XP -- at least until Vista's SP1 comes out.

i've played with Vista on the Inspiron, and I actually like Vista, and would rather not have to pay for it when SP1 comes out.
And actually, I've since upgraded to Vista Ultimate

Seems to me those specs should be able to handle WoW. Maybe not maxed out, but it should be adequate. Do you have some kind of Norton idiotware installed?

One thing that people don't account for is how dramatic a difference a 7200rpm drive is...other than that, I think your system ought to be at least playable if the graphics settings are turned down to a medium level in the game.

Hmm, that doesn't sound like that great a deal esp. considering the inferior perf of the AMD Turion X2 chips vs. the Core 2 Duos ( http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/27/dual_core_notebook_cpus_explored/page11.html).

I got the config in my sig below (but w/only 1 gig of RAM) for $1294.60 w/tax ($1196.40 before tax) during one of Lenovo's recent great deals after a price match. The Quadro 570m graphics is the rough equivalent to the 8600M GT. BTW, you can get some idea of what how your former x1270 does in graphics benchmarks by looking at the 3D Mark 05 score at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3846.

If you're going to order any Dell, at least check http://www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm for coupons first.
