I called Dell and requested a replacement system (Vostro 1400 with 8400 GS 1280 x 800) due to a nasty light leakage problem. Well I just recieved my replacement, only took 3 days. I am very happy with the speedy service.

Now on to the laptop itself. On my originally ordered laptop I have the CMO screen which I liked a lot when I got it (disreguarding the light leakage). The whites look white. And there was absolutely nothing else wrong with the system, LOVE it.

The replacement. I got the SEC screen with this one. I notices that the screen itself is brighter and seems sharper too(easier on the eyes). Though the whites look on the yellow side and there is still light leakage. The system doesn't sit balanced like my other unit, almost like one of the rupper stoppers on the bottom is taller than the other one. Also when I open and close the screen it seems to be loose for a little bit then it gets tight then loose, then tight(hard to explain).

This is basically what I would like to know:
    1. Will Dell accept the unit they have sent me as the unit I send back?

    2. For some reason I still like the CMO screen more than the SEC screen even though the SEC one is sharper brighter, and easier to read. Is there any way to make the CMO screen look similar to the SEC one? I've read using Color Correction but I couldn't find this feature.

    3. In the nVidia control panel there are the options to control "Digital Vibrance" and "Image Sharpening" Though it won't allow me to mess with either of those options, is there a way to let me do that?

I was told by a Dell rep that it doesn't matter which you send back as long as it's always one out to one in... this seems wrong as they move the warranty to the replacement machine as soon as it's sent (or maybe delivered) so I think there will be some hassle getting the waranty back on teh original one at some point...

But according to at least one CSR it doesn't matter which you send back...

It seems that you were happy with both screens. Could you please tell us that whether they were glossy or not.

Yeah and even if it was refurbished. You may just get a 3 month old processor!

    The horror!

    Both are non-glossy.

The Dell Rep I talked to said specifically "Okay, your replacement laptop will be built and mailed to you within 5 to 7 business days."

Yes they should be a new system for replacement systems. However, My replacement came so quick, and the box it came in was really worn looking. The screen was incredibly grainy AUO... probaby worse then most AUO's even.. I expect it was on the outter edge of the grainy control chart range :)

I have now read several posts about uneven rubber stoppers on these new Dells. And this is not the first time I have read issues with the hinges.. my first had a crack between the hinges on the lid assembly. I understand that you will see more complaints then people saying good on these forums. There just seems to be so many complaints in comparision to how many I see in HP's forums (remember HP sells sells more notebooks then dell with 28 percent of the market). Especially about displays which tells me there is something wrong and out of control with Dells manufacturing processes..or lack of. Its too bad that people have to wait so long for their dells.. only to be dissapointed when they arrive.. Still worse, they wait for replacement systems only to realize that the whole dell experience was a waste of time. Even more amazing, to me, are those that wait on a second replacement (third system) hoping that they will get a good one. This company needs to re-do their processes on quality control. Sure there may be some magnesuim alloy in these new dells, but I don't think for one second its build quality is any better from it.
