    That usually happens if you are trying to use a display but your video card cannot support. I had the same problem when I upgraded my laptop's display to 1680x1050 as it wouldn't display properly until I upgraded to my video card (from the 8400M GS to the 8600M GT). Have you recently replaced/upgraded your screen? If not, try as stated above, reinstalling the nVIDIA drivers and make sure they are the correct versions (32-Bit/64-Bit) to your operating system (Windows XP).
