I'll probably catch a lot of flak for this, but I thought I'd just state that I like Vista, and its not as bad as I nor everybody else declares. Sure it has its faults, but for the most part, I like it.

Like many I waited until after SP1 came out. Before receiving Vista on my m1530 I was thinking of wiping it out and throwing on XP. However, after receiving it and disabling those stinken pop up alerts (wanting your approval before doing anything). I was pretty happy with Vista. I like the look and feel of it. I do miss the "up one folder icon" that was in XP windows.

Anyways, how about the rest of you that have used Vista for at least a week or more?

I love it, even though I have recently downgraded to xp.
Will try a dual boot soon: xp for gaming and vista for work! :)

I've had Vista on at least one machine since November 2006 when it went gold. (I had a technet subscription at the time.) First on my old XPS M140, then later on a brand new PC I built specifically to run it, and now on my M1530. It's always been rock solid for me, even from the start. I've never suffered any of the issues claimed by many. I'll tell you this...I installed Windows 95 the day it was released, and pretty much every Microsoft OS since. Vista out of the gate was without a doubt the smoothest experience.

Everyone has different tastes, and if someone doesn't care for the look and feel of Vista, that's OK. But I think the OS has gotten a bit of an undeserved bad rap with regards to its "suckiness" as an OS.

I don't really have any qualms with Vista other than the 1GB of RAM required to boot. I have an M1330 with only 1GB...(it's pitiful, I know, I'm just broke), and by the time I get to my desktop, it's already running 860MB.

You will find that many people like Vista, and that many that say "Vista sucks" and "Vista is garbage" can't even give you a good reason why other than "just because". This isnt to say that people dont experience problems with Vista, because I, my friends, and people on this forum have had many compatibility issues with it. Many will tell you that Vista is a good OS as well, that just need some improving while many others will tell its horrible. Its simply a matter of opinion.

i think vista is good fro family pcs because it is a lot harder for kids to mess any thing up
and i think vista is fine at gaming you just have to tweak everything in the msconfig and then it runs a hell lot of faster...

I mentioned in another topic, but I reinstalled XP32 for a month a few months back, and I was disappointed to find how much little performance difference there was between XP and Vista, I ended up just going back to Vista 64.

In general, if you have ample power to run Vista, it'll perform similar to XP. It's only when you push the machine (for example, by running Vista on a non-Core2 system) where Vista struggles. I find that after tweaking and disabling the services I need (I do NOT need Superfetch and Readyboost for gaming, I know some people feel them essential).

Mind you, there are plenty of other reasons why I don't like Windows anyway, and use Linux for anything but gaming ;)

prefetch is awesome. The only thing I dislike is if I press windows key then another key it starts searching rather than navigating the start menu as XP did.

if you look back on all the windows versions people always ***** about how bad the 'new' version is and how much better the previous is. Same is true now of Vista and XP and those are the same people that complained about how bad XP was when it came out and swore 95 was better. Me personally i think Vista is fantastic and I'm running it on a 4 year old Inspiron 6000 with only a 1.5 gigs of ram and have NEVER had an issue. :D

I think its great dont know what all the fuss is about. Ive tweaked it though and tweaked it within mintues of getting it :D So cant really comment on using AERO. But without aero and no indexing and a whole other load of stuff disabled it runs really well. No freezes or restarts as of yet. But not been using it for a week yet...

runs all my music software like a charm even though everyone was saying it wouldnt.

Surprisingly Vista SP1 boots faster on my Laptop than XP does. Oh yeah, you can set it to classic start menu style if you don't like it.

Supposedly Sp1 closed the gaming gap between Vista and XP. My 3dmark is lower in Vista, but I've never noticed much of a difference in games, except NFS Prostreet which runs better in Vista.

Given how much the installed base has swelled since the release of XP, I'm convinced that much of the uproar comes from users who literally have never been through an OS change before. They started on XP. It's all they've known. Lots of people probably just don't understand that ALL OS upgrades are fraught with peril at the beginning.

Vista FTW! I was guilty of reverting to XP on my previous notebooks, but once I forced myself to use Vista and install my critical applications for work, I am a convert!

Superfetch is awesome.....Firefox loads instantaneously for me, even after a cold boot. Under XP, Firefox takes 8+ seconds to load...

I actually thought that was a Firefox problem and not XP itself as it seems to take forever to load no matter what OS or system Im using. With that said, I'm yet to try it in Vista.

I like Vista too. Firefox naturally consumes a lot of memory and yes, its not XP itself.

I highly recommend downloading the RC1 of Firefox 3. They have resolved the memory issue so the speed of starting up is equivalent or better than starting up IE 6. VERY impressive.

From my point of view, I do prefer Vista over XP because it is easy to manage, deploy and secure the OS. You will be surprise that a lot of companies are converting to Vista.

When you team Vista with Server 2008, you would be surprsised how powerful the OS can be. Vista's Network Access Protection alone would blow other OS out of the water. I am not talking about only one computer. If you have to manage 1000+ machines, Vista is the only way.

Well, I have never used Vista for other purpose than fixing it for its owners. All of them complain, but they were't good users of XP to begin with.

I've wanted Vista since it came out but I waited. Now I am waiting for my XPS M1530 and Vista is one of the features I'm looking forward to. At last Vista and me, alone in a room, no fixing to do!

i dislike vista. not because i'm going with all the bad comments about it, but because my current experiences with the OS amounts to little more than a barrage of headaches.

the user account protection thing is a nice feature, but annoying. some installers i've tried won't run until the thing is turned off, all it is is a software based version of the xp "trick" where you essentially work in a limited account, seperate from your administrator.. any spyware or unwanted stuff that wants to install can't, as you're not an administrator

ready boost is a nice idea, but it's not exactly a neccesity, you can get programs in XP that do the same.

Compatibility wise Vista is a tonne better than it was when it first came out.. but i still often try running programs on our vista machine to find something or other going wrong with it. the worst part is if you run something that the system disagrees with, you don't get an error message, the cursor simpley transforms to that annoying little circle and doesn't let you click on anything..

the intterupt key interface seems better than XP, but it makes you wonder whether i really should be using it as often as i do for a OS that's supposedly "smoother and easier" than it's previous iteration.

the only real benefit to vista ( from my perspective) is if you want Direct X 10. as a gamer that is enough to warrant having it, (particularly with a high end rig), but for everything else, i'll stick with XP, in my experience it is generally faster, easier to use as i'm more accustomed to it, and more stable. but that's to be expected of an OS like XP, stability tends to improve over time..

i shall solve the issue by securing a 64 bit version of Vista and dual booting eventually, making a "bridge" where i have the security of a familiar and stable OS with 32 bit apps, and the capability to play with 64 bit apps in this newer, bolder OS.

i'll give vista one thing though, the interface does look pretty.

Fact is, Vista is basically on Sustainment Mode. Why else would Microsoft be working on Windows 7? Microsoft actually recently published an article about reasons to use Vista for businesses. It is kinda sad, but... hey, at least we can pretty much be guaranteed that Windows 7 will not be delayed. After all, they are forcing hardware manufacturers to beta test it once the first beta comes out or else they won't be considered Windows compatible.

Actually as far as I know, Microsoft starts working on new versions of the operating systems even before the current one gets released. And that's not a guarantee that it won't be delayed if there are issues later on in the development cycle.

I've only worked under Vista for a couple of days, but I'm liking it so far. Yes, some services and "enhancements" are very redundant, but that is easily configurable which is usually only one google search away. What bothers me most though is people who b*tch and moan about how Microsoft sucks, but never switch to Linux (and I mean for personal use, not when work enforces a certain OS).

Apple has begun to work on OS X 10.6, guess they must be in sustainment mode too. So have the Ubuntu guys working on 8.10. Why would it matter if they publish an article pushing for their OS to be used in businesses? That's what companies do...

(Sustainment mode Im referring to the Vista OS, NOT Microsoft overall)

Omg.. linux... I mean, its fun to use, though I would never use it as my primary OS. Though Ubuntu has some nice plugins that make windows burst into flame when closed and stuff... it is pretty slick.

Anyways, everyone that says Windows 7 is coming out so much earlier, notice XP has long lifespan, should really consider the fact that when Windows XP was out, there were and still are many people using Windows 2000 and NT, so why not say 2000 is a suprerior OS since Vista came out a few years after XP came out? People need to stop hating Microsoft and appreciate what they have done.

Though in this particular case, if complaining about Microsoft in regards to Vista will make sure the next edition of Windows comes out on time without any delays due to such complaints and demand... by all means I'm fine with the people who complain. I won't be one of them, but I'll sure reap the benefits of their complaining. :)

I downgraded to XP. But to be very honest, Vista is a lot better than it used to be (pre SP1 I guess). I think it's fine but, by the time I like it enough that I would actually use it, Vienna would be out. That's why I chose to skip vista all together and wait it out with XP :p

    Valid point.

Along the other point though, it is good Microsoft learns from its mistakes. Vista made HUGE changes to the kernel. That's what happens when you patch up security exploits or flaws. It BREAK backwards compatability. Windows 7 will feature a far less drastic change in the kernel. Never the less, it is good Microsoft is pushing hardware vendors to test their crap early. Procrastination and contempt is the bane of diligence. (where have I heard this from?) or in plain words, Idle hands do the Devil's work.

Windows 7 is as new an os as Windows 98 was to Windows 95. It will be a service pack in disguise and they're marketing it as a whole new OS because of all the people who got carried away by the 'Vista is teh suxx0rz' internet campaign. Smoke and mirrors.

This are certain assumptions to me: Vista will be a much better OS by the time 7 gets released. By then, some of today's Vista detractors will have silently switched to Vista. By then, a percentage of people will prefer Vista over Windows 7. How do I know this? Because that's what always happens only this time I think they're making a good marketing campain for Windows 7 but is still too early to know where it will go.

Yup. Its always the way it works, except people will like Windows 7 better as its mainly going to compatible with more software. Though im sure lots of people will also have negatives about Windows 7 being some steps back from Vista because of this and that.
