Gratz on your new purchase! New laptops are always fun :)

I can testify WOW on my system (in sig) with XP Pro I usually run native 1680x1050 almost maxed out with 2 gig of ram just fine, and since your video is faster you'll have no problem maxing it out.

Enjoy your new system whenever it arrives!

Couldn't you have gotten a SLI 7950 GTX M9750 for the price of that?

I play wow maxed on my old x1600 system and love it. Too bad I need a 17in and more power or Id keep this one.

The base alienware was the same price as the dell, and since I got the dell I have alot more multitasking and CPU power as well as vista business. I do game alot, but mostly play WoW, old FPS, and RTS games so I need more CPU power and OS business capabilities then I do graphics. If it was apure gaming machine I would have gotten the gateway with the 8800gts from best buy. But as for the alienware for the specs I got in the dell I would have to have paid 2500+ for what I got in the dell and still wouldn't have gotten vista business. For that price there was no SLi 7950 cards just a single 7950.

Yeah we bought a 1500 for my office and after messing around and configuring it I fell in love. Its not a pretty laptop or over the top but its sturdy and does all the multitasking I threw at it (minus an app or two). So with the new 45nm CPU and 1mb extr l2 cache I think I will be VERY satisfied. Coming from an old Core duo, yeah core duo not Core 2 duo :p , laptop will be like driving a civic and getting into a viper.

All in all I'm really happy I chose the dell, after I bought it I helped the president learn office 2007 on his vostro at work and I had a huge grin using it. :D

my laptop specs are in my sig. the vostro is a pretty sturdy laptop.though i hate seeing finger prints on its matt finish,it makes the laptop look ugly..but after a quick cleaning, its beauty is back again..i'm not a harcore gamer but yeah,i'm a gamer and i'm fully satisfied with my laptop.i was eyeing the toshiba x205 before buying my vostro.it had basically the same specs apart from a 8700m gt which is an over clocked 8600m gt but it was WAY too expensive in the uk.i got the vostro for nearly half the price and i'm able to play crysis without the slightest game lag on 800*600 on all settings to low.it was lagging on 1024*768 on all medium but hey,its a gddr2 so we mustn't expect too much from it. The speakers are more than enough for a laptop. the dedicated music buttons are fabulous. windows vista runs great and there's no lagging.the 8600m gt will prove itself trustworthy for at least the next 2 years coming.i will be using this laptop for approximately 4-5 years.this will be more than sufficient for software engineering which i'm starting at university this year. man,in terms of support, build quality, durability and money,i can assure u that this is a best buy. the gateway sure has a veeery good graphics card but its build quality is not the same as our precious vostros which have magnesium alloy. so wat do i say more??The penryn is definitely a good choice.man, vostros rock!! LONG LIVE DELL VOSTRO!!

I was also looking at the HP dv9700 and the gateway FX from best buy. I needed the resolution for multitasking and thats what brought me to the dell. Yeah a very small part of me wanted the 8800, but then again an 8600gt will play wow at 1920x1200 res maxed out so whats the need. :p

For the price of that you could have gotten a Sager NP5793 with a 8700gt.. eesh. Vostros also aren't too good at handling heat..unlike the Sager.. also Sager is better built and has a user upgradable gpu, and better warranty/tech support through companies like xoticpc and powernotebooks..

    WSXGA+
    t8100
    8700gt
    2gb
    100gb 7200rpm
Throw your own operating system on for only ~$100 more than the Vostro..

Why rain on his parade?? Besides, his is WUXGA not WSXGA+.

That said, I agree that Sagers are great---the one in my sig was bought back in 2006 and still runs everything I throw at it just fine.

Why would you say that the vostros aren't good at handling heat?

My Cpu has NEVER gone above 72C, and my GPU has NEVER gone above 70C even while I"ve had it overclocked to 599gpu, and 550ram. My processor is not a penryn, so with the 45nm architecture, the temperatures should be even lower.

I'm extermely happy with its heat dissipation ability. I don't even have a laptop cooler and it has never come even close to overheating and downclocking.

The vostro also has an upgradeable graphics card, and CPU.

As much as that statement goes, it is only true partially. It can only be considered "upgradable", if Dell decided to release another GPU with the same assembly (which I hope they do. ), it may be set up like the way it is so business users can switch out the graphic card in case something went wrong, who knows...

    @liquidxit2
    Glad to hear that. :)

Well, it's as true as that statement is true about any other laptop... The graphics card is discrete, not integrated, and IF new cards come out for the same interface, MXM I believe, they should be interchangeable. I doubt that Dell is going to sit on their hands, and not release any 9000 series geForce for the Vostros and their home equivalents. Unless they completely drop the Vostro design.

Again though, angelicvoices, on what do you base your statement that Vostros are not good at dealing with heat? I've been posting and reading these forums ever since I ordered my Vostro back in November, and from all the various geforce 8600gt OC threads, the people that had Vostros seemed to be able to push their cards the most w/o overheating issues. I am in no way saying that Vostros are the only laptops that manage heat well, or that they are the BEST, but they are in NO way bad at it. Also logic dictates that a 1700 should be even better at managing heat than a 1500 or 1400 since it is physically bigger, and has more room inside + more surface area on the bottom.

I got a Vostro 1500 with a WSXGA+ Truelife screen, T5270 proc, 2GB RAM, wireless Draft-N, 9-cell battery, 160GB 7200RPM HDD, 8600M GT, and Windows XP Home for just a bit over $500 after shipping and taxes.

For the price, I can't be happier :)

I hate to bring this thread back but the dell has more then the sager. If Im correct the 8700 is a shrunk down OCd 8600, which is nice and all. But the 8600gt will do me fine as well as I get more storage and a much higher resolution then the sager. Now Im not saying dell > sager, but in this situation I feel that the specs of the dell will better suit my needs as I need alot more screen real estate and storage. All in all I got everything I need with the dell and more, and as for my gaming needs the 8600gt will more then keep me happy for 2 years. Heck I made an x1600 last 2 + years and I can still play games perfect.
