I recently placed an order for an XPS 1530. Today I received a Coupon for $100 to Dell that expires in a couple of months. I can't use the coupon towards my XPS purchase. What should I buy from Dell?

A couple of thoughts I had:

    1)USB Thumb Drive
2)Carry Bag for my XPS 1530
    3)SD Card for my PDA

    Any thoughts? Any ideas?

Normally I wouldn't purchase any of these items from Dell because I could get them cheaper elsewhere but since I have the coupon I figure I might as well use it.

    Thanks!

Order another 1530 and use the coupon. Return the original 1530. :D

It says: "Not valid in the case of cancellation or return."

I would be affraid they would take the $100 off of the money they give back to me when I returned my original 1530.

Dell gave me $25 for no reason and I used it to buy a new color for my Inspiron. I still have a 15% off coupon and $150 GC coming and I have no idea what to get.

I DO know, however, getting SD cards from Dell is a waste of money when you can get them for 1/10th of the price elsewhere.

I say buy some toys so you can make your laptop a desktop replacement. USB port replicators, keyboards, stands, digital speakers, etc., etc.

I wouldn't ever use the keyboards, stands, etc. Most of the time when I am using my laptop I am in a place where I couldn't use all of those things.

I agree about the SD cards being a waste but if I need one I might as well use the coupon instead of let it expire. I am leaning towards purchasing a nice messenger bag for my laptop but I don't know what would be a good one.

I'd have to agree that most of the accessories on their site are overpriced. Whenever my giftcard comes I plan to get a second battery for mine, they're still pricey but I want to buy it direct from Dell anyway.

After doing a little price shopping I am pretty surprised by Dell's prices on their accessories. They are not as expensive as I thought they would be.

Dell Targus 15.4" Brilliance Convertible Notebook Case - $56.09
    Shopping.com - $69.98

    Dell Kingston 2GB USB Drive - $17.99
    Shopping.com - $20.98

    Dell SanDisk 2GB SD Card - $22.49
    Shopping.com - $19.53

Not anywhere near as expensive as I thought it would be. In fact it is cheaper in 2 of the 3 items.

If you are going to buy a usb drive or sd card then i would say wait till your gift card is about to expire ... by that time you will get nearly double the amount of storage which you are getting now for the same price.

I'm trying to figure out what I want to buy as well. I have a $100 coupon from Dell as a rebate for a laptop I purchased in November (good until 3/30/08) and I'm waiting for my $50 GC to come in. I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and dropping that $150 on there. Thats about the only thing I would really get from them

If I had the $100 coupon (which I don't), but if I did....there is a sweet Messenger bag made by MobileEdge for $50 that I would buy, and it is cheaper @ Dell than anywhere else.

Some of them also have instant savings right now!! And, if the one I want is still available @ that price, when I get my 1530 (waiting on pins and needles) - I am going to order that Messenger bag!! ;) :)

How about an external modem, since the 1530 doesn't have a modem.

This is a sincere question: what do you do with a modem today? I haven't seen a dial up connection for years now.

I am going to miss having a modem, sometime I send fax straight from my notebook. Now I am going to have to print and find a fax machine. More I think about it, more I'll miss it. :(

What about using the 2MP webcam on the M1530 to take a photo of a document and then e-mail it or use efax-free?

I use my modem alot. If we spend the night in a hotel, and I don't want to spend $10+ for a wireless connection, I'll use the dial up connection to check my emails, etc.

Many RV parks don't have reliable wireless, even though you pay extra for it, so a modem is handy then too. It's going to be the first thing I buy when I get my 1530 in a few days!!

    Regards,
    Steve

Steve, what dial up service do you use? How much is it per month?

I use Compuserve. I have the highest level which is around $200/yr (annual payment, unlimited use, many local phone #'s [I lived in a motorhome for 3 years and never had a problem getting a local #]).

One thing I like is the lack of spam. I have used the same email address for approx 7 years and I only get 5 - 10 spam emails/week, and I am on many RV forums, etc.

    Regards,
    Steve

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't justify paying that much as I only occasionally may need dial up. I wish there was a pay as you go dial up service. Anyone know of one?
