Wouldn't you know it, I have been clumsy as can be today; I spilled three drinks. The first two were no real big deal, but the last one was right on the top of my 1420!Before I could do anything, it shut down and I don't know if it was in my mind or what, but I thought I could hear faint sizzling. Now I'm waiting for it to dry only so I can confirm I am hosed. Looks like I am stuck with a minimum of $200 for a new motherboard provided I haven't fried anything else. What a crappy end to a day...
...BTW, I'm switching to sippy cups!

Remove battery do not try turn on put source heat like close heat vent but not something that melt it let it dry for at least day longer better you can also remove thing like hard disk any acess panel to let air get into dry it

I'm sorry to hear that and I feel your pain. That automatic shut down + faint sizzling sound means your mobo is dead. This happened to me before on my Toshiba Tecra
I ended up selling my bricked Toshiba on ebay for $80 and got myself a new laptop. But don't worry, your hard drive should still be salvageable and you shouldn't worry about lost data.

I don't care if you broke your laptop or not, watch the potty mouth.

Good advice on removing the panels, Andy. I've had it sitting in front of a fan and it will continue to stay there until I decide to try powering it up. Do you think Dell would be able to tell water was spilled on it if I tried to warranty it? I should have bought the Accidental Damage policy. It's less than a year old AND to make it worse, it is actually my wife's! Got to love her, she wasn't upset, but I was kicking my self in the butt over it. I even offered to buy her a knew one, but she said to try to fix it.
I'm thinking of switching my user name to Danger-Prone Daphne. -

I find it hard to believe someone who talks like a sailor would be offended by my avatar, so

What were you drinking that would cause you to spill 3 times?
-
I will say this though. IT WORKS!!!
Perhaps the sizzling was all in my head. I don't care though, because IT WORKS!!!
Edit:
Ok, I was a bit over-zealous about posting that it works. It seems that it is not without some problems. Looks like it will need a new keyboard since certain keys produce eratic letters, e.g. hitting the "T" may produce the letters "TGB" or spring up the Search function in Firefox and insert characters. I'm still very happy, though. A keyboard is SOOOO much cheaper than a motherboard.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
It is possible that the sizzling was the water hitting something hot.

switch off the laptop immediately.....and remove the battery/power
the erratic keys mean there is still a bit of water in there
i suggest leaving it in a well ventilated place for at LEAST 5 days . if not all the water is gone, you risk permanently ruining it by shorting something out... resist the temptation to try and power on -
We like to keep things PG-13 around here. I understand damaging one's notebook is upsetting, but that's not an excuse to use profanity. As long as were in agreement on that, there'll be no problems in the future.

Well my wife has been using it most of the day and the total damage now seems to be the "B" key is no longer working right. The erratic letters stopped almost immediately after I posted, but the one letter not working properly required the purchase of a keyboard. I picked up a new one off ebay for a little over $20 shipped priority and should be here before the weekend if all goes well. Certainly less expensive that initially estimated. Thankfully, it seems the keyboard shields the motherboard well enough to survive a minor splash. I don't suggest trying this though!

Well good thing it works a keyboard is a lot cheaper than a hosed MOBO. Good on ya!

Glad to hear that its working again! you can always use the keyboard cleaner and spray the keyboard and freeze it. hoping the water will evaporate with stuff.
ive got one incident much worse then you with a desktop mobo that involves 5 gallons of water and a turtle tank lol -
I think the turtle tank breaks the bank in this type of issue.
-
well i was filling my tank back up, its a 80 gallon tank and i keep it on the same desk i test stuff on. So it was just a board sitting on a raised platform with everything hooked up.
I went to fill the tank up with some water since i noticed it was low, slipped and ended up pouring 5 gallons of water ALL OVER my setup.
Water was everywhere, in the pci-e slots, on the video cards, ram, ram slots, you name it. I had to take everything apart, pat dry with my microfiber towels and sat them under a lamp for 2 days.
Put everything back together and the thing posted and booted back up hahaha! -
Well 1 or 2 years ago my Dell Inspiron 9300 drank a cup of Mc'Donald coke right on the keyboard and went in a coma, I took the buttons out and clean it with a wet towel(a little too wet that there might be some water went inside), 2 days later it woke up and worked healthily until now.

It is working and would probably have to work until Dell releases new XPS grade laptop lol.
-
If one has the Complete Care service contract from Dell, and water destroyed the laptop, would it be replaced at no charge?
-
That's the idea.
