I just received my new Dell M1330 Dec. 20, ordered (Dec. 17) and it has a very annoying high pitch whine. Before I ordered it, I had read that earlier systems had this problem, but I thought it had been resolved.

I don't know if it's the same whine as was reported on earlier systems. I did a search and some the threads I found regarding the noise described it as a high pitch morse code type sound. Mine is a constant high pitch piercing sound. It doesn't start making the noise until a couple of a few minutes after it has booted up. It literally gives me a headache, and even after turning it off it leaves my ears ringing for a while.

I tried the suggestion here by changing the power setting, but it doesn't do anything for the noise.

This thread mentioned that a new revision A04 motherboard should fix it, and someone else posted that all new systems made in Malaysia come with the new A04 MB. Apparently not. My system, as I mentioned, was ordered on Dec. 17, and has a sticker on the box that says "COMPUTER MADE IN MALAYSIA." Someone in the mentioned thread said the MB revision is under the RAM. I removed the bottom cover, and the only thing I saw was A01, another sticker to the right of the RAM, on the heatsink had A01 on it as well. Does this mean I have to send my new system back?

No one ever reported back in that thread if they received the new MB and if it fixed the problem. I didn't want to drag up and old thread, but maybe I'll bump it up to see if anyone had theirs fixed.

Hi there, Mine has the same High-Pitch noise. I think it is some type of wireless device. I used to have a VAIO VGN-C series and it had the same annoying whine, its not a fan I dont think, I beieve it is some type of wireless device in the laptop...Almost like the same sound when a CRT TV is turned on, it has that high pitch noise.

Could it be the high pitched CPU whine noise that so many have mentioned before?

I contacted Dell today (1/1/08, and the XPS support was very helpful). I have the new mb (rev A04) but still have the high pitched sound. They are sending a new motherboard and will have a tech install it. If that does not improve the sound I will send it back.

I have A04 MB with A06 BIOS, CPU whine is almost inaudible from a normal working distance. (Ordered from DELL Japan on Nov 28, delivered on Dec 08th) I think mine is made/assembled in China.

You have the older motherboard that doesn't fix the issue, apparently Dell thinks its cool to sell the old stock to unsuspecting customers.

The above description does not say that they looked in the correct location. I just got my m1330 with a mb A04 and it still has the high sound. When I looked for the mb version the A01 was everywhere. You have to look in a very specific location to find the mb version.

He did look at the right location under the ram. Besides I know for a fact they using the old MB still because I asked for a replacement and the customer relations tech I was working with told me he can't guarantee I'd get a new MB that was A4 since they basically use what they got on hand. And what happened? Got a brand new one sent to me, with Revision 1 and the whine.

I have an A04 mb and it has the whine. So at this point I dont see where it matters which mb you get. They are sending a tech to put in a new A04 but I am not optimistic.

The loudness of the whine also depends on your environment. :p
For example, I can hear it when I'm working in my room with the door closed but elsewhere, I can't really hear the whine (background noise overshadows whine)

i have a solution to the problem. It'll give you great satisfaction. Call dell and tell them to send out a tech to look at your computer. When the technician comes:

take the laptop and beat the **** out of him with it. There is a proper procedure for beating too... Beat until one of two things happens. He dies, or the laptop falls apart in your hand.

My m1330 was so quiet. I didn't have that stupid remote in there. Then i finally put it in and now it' wont ****ing shut up. I'm so friggin mad right now. I'm making 1 last effort to fix this **** untill they give back my 2000 dollars. And if they don't want to cough it up I'm gonna take them to court. How ****ing hard can it be for them to fix this problem. Jesus christ!

On a side note: one thingI did notice is that when I pick up the laptop the whining goes down a lot. Put it back on the desk/table/flat surface and whine-galore. I feel like crying. Class starts tomorrow and i dont have time to ask for another replacement. Not that i would because the replacements suck too.

I contacted Dell, and the guy I talked to said he would put a note on the case that I had the noise problem and requested I be sent the latest revision. The guy said they were just going to send me just the notebook, no accessories with a pre-paid return box and instructions on returning the "defective one." DHL just delivered the new notebook, left it on the front porch, and didn't ring the bell, just like the first one except this time it wasn't raining.

They sent me the whole order again, not just the notebook, and there are no instructions on how to return the "defective" one.. I just opened the cover and it does say A04 under the RAM, it also say A04 on the sticker on the bottom of the notebook.

I'll post back after I get a chance to set it up and see if it fixes the noise issue. If not, I'm just going to return them both for a refund and look for something else.

Do you have any news yet on the whine? I have the same problem and I am DYING to get a solution. Since you have already been through the headache I figure your advice is far better than going thru Dell... at least for now. I hope to hear from you!!

I could have sworn I posted back here after trying the new one. Anyway, the new one still whined, the pitch was different, but still just as annoying. I sent it back for a refund and ended up buying an EeePC.

I think it worked out for the best though. I did like the M1330, but the whole experience made me re-evaluate my needs vs. my wants. The little EeePC is everything I need, where the M1330 was everything I wanted. After taking the EeePC on a few trips now, I don't think I will ever go back to a full size notebook. Now if we could just M1330 specs in the EeePC size (and price)...

I haven't kept up with the M1330 since, so I don't know if it was ever fixed. I can only suggest that if you can't stand the noise, send it back and get something else.

Hey it won't help out some here like Jimnms but I solved the whine :D after finding a post at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/947790.html.

Below I have copied what I found:

"Anyone know how to stop that annoying high-pitched whine?"

"Yep its a processor whine, plenty of fixes on Google and probably in threads here, basically go into Device Manager, then select the Bluetooth adapter (not the enumerator) properties, and turn off Power Saving for that device (last tab), it will stop it dead in its tracks.

"Amazes me support didnt know about that."

That is all I did... and it worked!! I hope it works for everyone else and IF it resurfaces I will be back to debunk my findings :)

I tried that and many other "solutions" posted here and other sites, it did nothing to the noise. One of the other solutions IIRC was to disable CPU power management (set min and max value to 100%).
