I really need to get a new laptop before Aug 15. I'm interested in either the xps1330 or 1420 (like everyone else), but I'm cash strapped so I want to keep it in the 800-900 pre-tax range. Do you guys think Dell will come out with some offers comparable to the ones they used to have?

Also, can people who have actually purchased xps1330 or 1420 post their configs and price? I want to see what kind of deal I can get right now.

BTW, I have already signed up for the university deal.

    Dell has a coupon for $350 off a 1420 over $1399.

That's definitely doable (your price, that is), if you don't completely trick out your system. With the coupon, especially. What are your needs?

HAHAHA, I'm in the same shoes as you right now. I just ordered a Dell M1330, but I'm thinking about canceling and ordering a D420...

But then again, I think I'll stick to the M1330... I don't really need to save that much weight.

That sounds like a very good plan, especially given all the price fluctuations with the new Inspirons.

Thanks for the posts. I think, though, these are the prices I want to avoid. If I am gonna shell out ~1500 for a 14" I might as well get a Asus A8Js or the like with a much better graphics card, and comparable stats... (and its an Asus, this is a Dell.) Hopefully better coupons come up.

Some of the complaints from the A8Js is that the case is made of cheap plastic cover and the mouse pad is made of same plastic that can discolor with use. Also some complaints about the asus screen being a bit dim.. The Dell has had some really good reviews with its WSXGA (1,440-by-900)true bright screen and movies are reported to really look good. Also the 1420's chassis is housed in magnesium alloy which is a stronger material found on higher end notebooks. In all fairness, I priced the Asus with similar features at agearnotebooks.com For one, I can't get a 160HD on the Asus.. only up to 120 HD. After adding in another gig of ram, and three year waranty the asus priced out at 1733 dollars... My 1420 system also added in a dell bluetooth travel mouse, and a larger drive. However, I admit, the asus does have the killer graphics which my 1420 system only has the intel x3100 integrated.

In summary, if I were to downgrade my order to a 120 Hd, take out the bluetooth mouse, the asus system would be 350 dollars more all else the same other then the graphics options. I also must add that battery life reports 2.5 hours at best with the asus. I expect 3-4 with the dell.
So if gaming is your thing, I think your right.. the asus is the way to go.. But if its not, I think the dell may have a better display, better constuction, larger HD options and overall better looking with different color options.

EDIT: Just realized that the ASUS A8Js is also still using last generation Intel chip set.. T7200.. anything with even numbers is the older one.. newer santa rosa is using odd number... T7300 etc.. After realizing this, I have to say the Asus has nothing over the 1420 in price/value. Its true that the Asus will still have better game play.. but I don't think it is fair that a non santa rosa system be compared to the 1420. Even with that the asus still costs alot more overall. I may add that the asus is probably overpriced at this point.

One thing that I have seen, is that generally speaking, there are no magic sytsems that offer comparable specs at substantial discounts. I have been shopping for awhile and believe that PC's and notebooks is a really competitive industry. The asus cost more.. but only because it has a expensive graphics card. I did order a Sony CR last week and had to cancel that since that system truly did cost more compared to the competition (I guess Sony is the exception to the rule.. they really bank on their name brand but sonys are not what they used to be). Personally I feel the 1420 is the best value for my money. If Dell were to suddenly drop that price 200 more, then I think other manufacturers would also do the same.. The margins are too thin these days. These things have become commondities and have been extremely price driven for quite awhile. As for when we will see price drops? Who knows, but anything with the new santa rosa processors will cost more since that is the newest thing.. the hot cake at the moment. We will always pay a premium to own the hot cake device.

As for the coupon code, I priced the 1420 system on dell.. put in the code and indeed got 350 dollars off. But what happened is they bumped the whole sytem price to like 1900 dollars or something high like that. I did this after I had already called dell and placed the order where they chopped off a hundred bucks. Using the coupon would have cost me more then what I got from the agent. If you are a student, I think you may do a bit better then I did. But if not, I suggest pricing out a sytem on dell.. then call them up and be nice to the agent.. The agents do have some room to drop the price, or add a free case and mouse etc...
