i doubt they will give you a free xp cd.... all dell sends you are REINSTALLATION cds.... Meaning they might agree on a vista reinstallation cd but not xp because you coudlnt use it anyway. And they sure as hell wont send you brand new XP.

Even if you somehow convince them to send you ANY reinstallation cd i would have serious doubts that they would do a reinstallation for you... If it bothers you that much you need to learn how to do the reinstall yourself.

They won't send you a free XP disk ... nor will they install an OS.

Your best bet is to buy a copy of XP and install it yourself. It's not difficult; we'll be here to help if you have questions/need a guide.

only way is to return the laptop and get a new one. else you have to get your own xp cd and install it yourself. not exactly ideal i assume for you, but those are your options. otherwise keep vista.

what is it that you dont like about vista?

i dont get the same thing. What is it that people hate about vista? the only thing i see wrong with it are the annoying permission boxes that pop out but you can disable those.... I find VISTA BASIC to be better than xp for all of my uses...

There are a lot of software compatibility issues. Even Outlook from OfficeXP does not work due to password issue. Most of the applications I used do not work in Vista (Nero 6, CorelDraw12, etc), not even in the so called compatibility mode. Vista Basic is totally useless. It just uses more resources, performs slower, and does not offer any new functions over WinXP. PCM said, you better off get IE7 on your WinXP than getting the Vista Basic.

Little bit OT but if you want a FREE copy of Win XP Pro AND you are a college student, try finding out what your school's computer science department will provide when you register those classes. I got a FREE XP PRO and VISTA BUSINESS by registering a class...

I thought the use of XP was being discouraged and not supported by microsoft. But I'm seeing more and more folks going back to Windows XP. Has microsoft changed their position - are they supporting this again?

I'm trying to get familiar w/Vista on a second system (w/Vista Ultimate). Our home system has Window XP professional and I really miss it.

Vista has given me some headaches w/compatibility stuff.
any information on windows XP is welcome.

Have you checked to see if the various software authors have any updates for Vista compatibility?

To answer your initial question, Dell will not provide you with an XP CD unless you ordered your laptop that way. As others have suggested, if you want XP, buy a copy and use it instead.
