Take a look at the Max, it's from playing ~20 minutes of Gears of War.

The thing is, those seems to be the normal temp I've been getting ever since I got my system, but until recently, I found out that it's NOT normal.

    Inspiron 1520
    Vista 32bit
    T7300 2.0ghz
    2GB Ram
    8600M GT 256mb
    160GB 7200RPM HDD

Running Gears, with FF and AIM + temp monitor in the background minimized.

I took some compressed air to my vents, but that's about it, should I undervolt? Contact Dell?

Contact Dell, sounds like your heatsink isnt seated properly. Your CPU isnt getting enough cooling.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to make it cooler, but I want to know if those are normal temps even with bad placement.

flipfire, I think I'll do just that.

What are considered normal temps w/ normal usage? Gaming usage?

My Core1 is at 57, 52, 67 (Current, Min, Max - all in degrees C)
    Core2 is at 60, 56, 68
    GPU (8600gt) is at 73, 71, 75

These temps are from web browsing for about an hour with the battery out and only the AC power adapter plugged in.

My wife's new xps doesn't get anywhere near this warm.

She's got a laptop cooler, undervolted cpu (down to 1.0v) and has the rear elevated to aid in cooling. CPU maxes out at 58C after several hours with orthos.

92/93C is insane, the cpu won't last long at those temps.

Undervolting does not lower performance, underclocking does.

And yeah, 93 C is not normal. I get around 68-70 C after running Orthos for 15 minutes (T7500). Usually 38-40 C when just web browsing. I have my CPU undervolted by 0.2 V and used Arctic Silver.

    Check the cooling guide here.

I've had the cpu on my 1520 that hot, but I was plaing a game and had a broken heat sync. I'd be worried about damaging the computer at that temperature.

Open up your computer by removing the whole RAM cover, then unscrew the heat sink and make sure that it is seated properly, nothing seems out of place, processor is normal. Best to take care of things yourself first if you can before calling up Dell.

GPU's temp is a little high for M1530, should be around 50-65...

CPU is definitely too high.... it should idle maybe 10 degrees above room-temp...

Dell tells me this is normal and that I should run a couple of diagnostics + update the BIOS. Guess I'll do just that.

    as a reference,

my T7300 in an Inspiron 1520 went up to 83C recently with the CPU fan running at max, but I was compiling a program with all two cores and the room was around 30C.

I was also stressing the Graphics card (8600GT) with a game, and remember the graphics card gets the cool air before the CPU.

I'm now browsing webpages w/ the AC adapter and battery both connected (w/ the battery charging) - the GPU has a 52min and 68max, which is still above the "50-65" mentioned. Is that a cause of concern? I'm on the original A08 BIOS and have not undervolted or overclocked

I've had heat probs with my Vostro 1500 since the day I got it. After hearing about the 8600M GT issue when Dell announced it (the very same day my warranty expired!!!), I installed CPUID Hardware Monitor a few days ago. WITH a dual fan cooling pad, these are my temps (and consistent with the chassis' radiant heat since day 1), in celcius, current/min/max:

    cpu 0: 59/50/93
    cpu 1: 60/54/92
    gpu: 52/44/85

Mind you, this is ALSO since I installed their bandaid bios "fix." I can't believe this thing hasn't fried (or started a fire!!!). Warranty or not, they ought to replace this clearly defective machine!

Battery life degredation isnt really all that much, only by 10 or so minutes. Its not as bad as you'd think.
