As you can see from my signature I have a I5150 and it has a P4 3.2 GHz processor. I also have 1 GB of RAM. Originally came this way from Dell almost four years ago.

Anyways, I'd like to get a new system (M1530) but don't really have the money for what I'd upgrade on that system. So, I am thinking of upgrading my system.

I know my max memory is 2GB, so I am upgrading the RAM to that with two sticks of 1 GB instead of two sticks of 512. This what I'm looking at getting for the RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820172109.

Now, on to the fun part. I am thinking to get a new processor. And this is the one I am looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111328.

My main question is, how do I find out that this CPU would work? I have searched for a while and couldn't really find anything about the subject. Is it even possbile to replace/upgrade the processor?

I'm 99.9% sure the processor will not work. The chipset/pinout is completely different.

I found out that the link I posted was for a P socket type.

The processor on the system is a Intel P4-M. On newegg you can filter down the results and I chose the socket M, and get some more options a little bit more expensive too... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111303.

Also - the chipset I'm using is Intel 855GME Chipset.

I hate to tell you, however, no Core Duo or Core 2 Duo chips will work in your system.

Your Socket is 478, not M.

Not only wouldn't it work, but you're looking at spending more money than the system is worth. I just sold my i5150 for a couple hundred bucks, when I received my new Vostro. The 5150 is still pretty quick depending on what you're using it for. I had the same exact system, and to be honest, I didn't notice much difference going from 1GB to 2GB. No matter what you do to it, the graphics will always be held back by the terrible Go5200. I'd save the money for a new system.

The $200 for the dual core wasn't so bad but I soon realized those wouldn't fit and the ones that "may" were $300+. So, not really worth it IMO. I'm not worring about the CPU upgrade.

I have been looking to upgrade to XPS so there is quite a price jump but I always customize the system pretty heavily.

What made you go with a Vostro?

I wanted a wide screen and a much better video card. The 5150 served me well, but I wanted something new. A few weeks ago, Dell was offering great deals on the Vostro 1500, and at the time, you could still get the 8600M GT as an option. I got a fully loaded 1500 with Penryn Processor, 3GB, and 8600M GT for $944.
